Coming from a country with 4,5 million people, I see what you mean, and it is pretty obvious why
-My entire country is smaller than one of NY`s suburbs.
-We don`t have a small group of people able to annihilate the earth if they felt cranky that day.
-As long as we have the oil, we`re pretty stable, but look at the economic situation all over the world, and tell me if there`s another country in teh world that impacts the stock markets worldwide as heavy as the US. (Except for China, but there are many other reasons for not taking them into the equation
-Most countries in the western world have some kind of reference to the US, through UN, through NATO, and through trade.
-Modern culture (i.e, Idol, MTV, ideal teeth, bodies... Hell, most of the people I know that speak English fluently speak American, even if we learn the queen`s English in school.)

You are interesting to other nations because of sheer size, man. If the biggest, most bad-assed guy in school told everyone plaid pants were the shit, you`d either wear them, or at least praise them... ESPECIALLY if he was prone to hint that you would lose some of your popularity with him for wanting to wear stripes instead...
