Payola was a small piece of the industry in the past; now it IS the actual industry.

I dunno, I more or less disagree. Guys like Freddie King may not have used payola themselves but the early companies he was signed with were directly involved with payola scandals and undoubtedly those companies had developed their networks using payola. Once they were busted, it just went underground into indirect forms of payola i.e perks and freebies.

It's nepo babies now because you have to have huge $ and/or close industry connections to build a brand, rather than just raw talent. The market is swamped with "musicians" most of whom are pretenders or are people who have a career handed to them in exchange for ownership of their name and likeness. I would say ultimately you are partly right, but the idea that bands in the 90's broke without using indirect payola is naive. It's been shown time and time again. The internet changed the industry but payola remains the driving force behind it all.

Yeah, that time period was when the big labels figured out that monopolizing streaming was the only way to retain control.

It's just crazy how differently the demographics of the industry are - great bands used to be "discovered". That isn't the case anymore.

A person can discover music, but it's not going to make any difference in an industry sense, because the only way up is paying your way. That used to be one of many different ways you could climb up the ladder, despite what VBF and Geo assume

I posted a video detailing the laurel canyon scene in the 60's down in OT. I think it's worth a watch. A huge portion of those people were nepo babies in the sense they had close mil-industrial-media contacts. Zappa, Stills, Morrison, Crosby, etc etc. I think it's been going on longer than you perceive, it was just less obvious due to a lack of internet providing more readily researchable info.

The thing you aren't seeing is scale.

Even if the 60s had a plurality of them, that is compared to everyone nowadays. It's not even remotely comparable.

I guess it's a pyrrhic victory then, because the AI slop is mostly going to replace the Nepo-record industry slop the normies already consume.

Just like AI is going to replace youtubers, instagram influencers, and a million other things.

It's sad watching it happen with complete certainty, because you know everyone is too lazy to do anything about it

I think it is less conspiracy and more monetary efficiency. It is the same reason movies got shittier, and mainstream amps have gotten so bland.

Everyone wants to hit as many customers as possible, so there is no soul; just a lot of different things for different interests.

Movies started mixing romantic situations into comedies so that men could stand to watch a movie their woman would like and they could still enjoy it.

Amps have multiple channels that don't really excel at one thing, but are super flexible and have no real dynamic voice. They come with preloaded shit IRs that are going to be outdated in a year if not by the time they come out. It is planned obsolescence with all the "features" that no one really needs, but think they do.

Tools have a lot of features that make you talk yourself into them because they can take the place of two or three, but they are shit at anything you actually use them for. But they sell really well before people realize how bad they are and have to replace them with multiple specialized tools.

It is consumer wide and they have no motivation to stop because it is a cash cow to make shit rather than something of substance which has a much, much narrower profit margin and following

It's really, really odd the number of "coincidences" when artists take their own life
