Dead music industry theory

You made the claim that hundreds if not thousands of bands were million sellers because it was possible to do so in the pre-internet age, and now it's not possible. I showed that a relatively small handful of bands actually achieved that in the pre-internet age.

You made a claim that doesn't really hold up to scrutiny. Bands and rock music fell out of favor around the turn of the century so saying it's impossible for an indie band to make that million sales mark isn't solely due to the digital age, but also by musical tastes of younger people, who by and large are the largest consumers of music, and do not listen to bands and rock music in the numbers they did in previous times.
Semantics dude. In LA in the late 70s and certainly the 80s, there were radio stations to cater to every type of music imaginable. All those bands may not have sold millions of records but they definitely got heard and were popular. Now there aren’t even any pirate or college radio stations. They’re all corporate franchises churning out either the same old shit they have been for 40 years or some other bullshit no one I know gives a fuck about.

Even if a really great band does form, the only way they ever get any traction is playing live. And unless you’re a cover band in a bar that always means pay to play.

He's just derailing the thread at this point being pedantic

Rockbitch is disgusting
Yes. Correct. I wouldn’t fuck ‘em with yours.
But you’re in a strange town with no money for cigarettes or food, at 10am.
Just send the girls out with a bucket, flashing vag for a quid.

It’s undeniable that Napster and Internet streaming threatened record companies and their reaction to that literally fucked every single band on the planet. Even the world’s biggest bands don’t make any money unless they constantly tour.

Yes. Correct.

Honestly I'm really surprised that they run afoul of prostitution, indecency, etc laws in countries they performed in

They created the environment that made the tactics in the OP video possible. It's quite literally the only way to break through the noise - paying bot farms to force feed your name, likeness, music onto everyone's screens.

That list is the most laughable thing you've ever posted to support one of your claims.

Look at the text at the top. There are hundreds of bands that have sold millions of records without mainstream radio airplay. I know this is really difficult, but just take the L.

The examples they gave pretty much go back to everything you complain about and everything I mentioned about mil-industrial ties.

The dead is basically a CIA sponsored band

The Dixie Chicks are literal nepo babies...Maines' dad is huge in Texas music.

Led Zeppelin and Floyd, millions of records sold=decades of massive classic rock radio airplay.

Anyways, you can win, cause I don't give a shit today. Hundreds if not thousands of bands never sold millions without radio airplay. A small handful of bands in each genre, who were already well placed or connected did.

Great, hopefully we can get someone with something interesting to comment instead of you derailing the thread with pedantry

It's not pedantic to point out that hundreds if not thousands of bands didn't sell millions of records without mainstream airplay. Very few hit that million mark.

U2 got early support in Ireland by playing live gigs; they gained local support which increased their bookings / number of live shows as promoters and venue owners saw packed houses when they performed.

Like the Beatles with Brian Epstein, U2 found a great manager early on, Paul McGuinness who focused on live shows and relentless touring not just radio airplay. He also got them a great deal with Island records.

What's missing in the last 20+ years or so, that we had back in the day, was a large number of independent, private clubs and venues; and independent promoters; local scenes, city scenes, state and regional club circuits, etc., that no longer exist.

The whole local / state / regional club ecosystems interconnected across the US; it supported sound companies, gear rental companies, lighting companies, road crews, etc. I remember seeing and being in battles of bands, local festival shows, with maybe one big local regional band, a few somewhat known bands, and mostly unknown bands.

Even in my little city, it was possible to find live music 5 nights a week in the winter, and 7 nights /days a week in warmer weather when the outdoor venues opened. Many local bands had a showcase where they rented a venue, and kegs of beer, charging a few dollars per person to get in, and they were usually packed.

I was in bands when other bands saw us, and vice versa, we planned to do shows together; in our area they'd open for us; in their area we'd open for them, and it gave us new places and audiences...we'd also get opening slots when bigger regional or national bands came through...increasing our exposure.

the live music circuits, venues and ecosystem that gave new, small, unknown bands a chance to perform and grow no longer exists; neither does an audience into going to see live music several times a week - though maybe they would if it was an option?

club owners are also to blame; it was cheaper to hire DJs vs bands, and pump in recorded music. I remember many clubs we played started having DJs Sundays, Mondays, Tuesdays, aka slow nights; and eventually had them many nights a week and no more live music except for bigger acts that could fill the place.

This is the 400th time you've done this type of thread derailing dude, what do you expect, a trophy?
A new forum will come with mods that don’t put up with faggotry so elite players, builders, and enthusiasts have a forum.

Instead of grease, squeaky wheels are given carte blanche to fuck up the board with petty nonsense at everyone else’s expense.

I suppose this is what happens when ownership and lead moderation are from countries fully conquered.

Here in the USA we still retain some semblance of freedom and “Don’t Tread on Me” ethos.

A friend is on an album cycle that’s been selling out and is a multiple Grammy award winner and I don’t talk about this place when helping him tweak his rig.

He recently did Kimmel and other big shows with his band. A former bandmate of his made some of the biggest pop records of the last 15 years and his current producer is S/God-tier.

Why don’t I suggest he come here?

Why?

Detractors are allowed to ruin the mood.

Y’all need to reign this nonsense in or another forum will be built that will destroy this one.

Mark my words.

I am well aware, man.

It's just overwhelming trying to keep the peace and police it without being a dick

That’s only because he told you to shut the fuck up when handling his penis.
Sounds like you “Elites” really do need a little forum all to yourselves.

Meanwhile, excuse us paupers and commoners.

very few successful players frequent forums; if the do, they do so incognito or lurk.

If I was a successful or well-known musician, I wouldn't make it known on forums...more trouble than it's worth I suspect.

If you're able to make a living or more from music, that's likely more than 99% of forum members. Participating in forums is waste of your time IMO

I had several conversations over the years with David Torn (splatt) before I was permabanned from TGP. He was always generous with his time and knowledge with me. Robert Holmes ('Til Tuesday original guitarist), was another, but he didn't stay long probably because of the TGP douchebag brigades. Kimock was another; Ed DeGenaro too

I am surprised that in interviews some well-know players seem clueless about gear, even their own gear, while others have to have certain batteries in their pedals, and specific tubes, etc. in their rigs, and many points in between.

I recently came across an Alex Lifeson interview talking about his signature amps, he didn't know what power tubes (EL34) were in his amps, he just liked the way it sounded. The interviewer informed him they were EL34, and Alex said what does that even mean; the interviewer said they are British sounding vs 6L6 that are American / Fender sounding...Alex replied, that makes sense as I always liked the Marshall sounds...

Eric Johnson mentioned some gear he stopped using because certain parts were no longer available, and new versions didn't sound the same.
