Can't really bring myself to watch/listen to anything from this chud after discovering that his music is the aural equivalent of chewing aluminum foil.

I didn't post it cause I thought his music was amazing. I posted it cause he moves a lot of records independently (supposedly indie) and details the reasons as to how billboard has been and still is 100% rigged against anyone not working with a mainstream label. If you aren't a working musician, or at least trying to be, it's not worth your time. If you are, it's eye opening, but you'll have to put aside your judgment of the dude's appearance and material if you wanted to gain some pretty interesting insights into how things actually work there. *shrugs
 
I didn’t watch the video, but it was pretty obvious during one of the last big Taylor Swift pushes that simply getting people to ask themselves “Why is everyone so interested in _____?” is all it takes, then when those curious people go stream one of the new big thing’s music, it gets counted as a play and is further used to demonstrate how popular they are.

And with that Angie Poutine stuff, you’re going to tell me after 50 years of prog music that’s actually memorable, people are going to take notice NOW? They’re quirky, but not in the SSRI/self-diagnosis way the youth of today focuses on.
 
It seemed to me that every music forum was spammed simultaneously with at least one “Who fuck are Poutrine?” thread.
Complete with 30-min video of some French gig.
 
I still say this isn't an industry thing, it is a lazy musician, a lot of music sucks thing.

I was four months old when Hendrix died, yet I am into his music and still enjoy it. My kid likes Hendrix too and sometimes you'll hear teenagers at Guitar Center playing Hendrix songs, Zeppelin, the Doors, etc.

Most of what I listened to growing up was from a band and wasn't a band thrown together by the industry. It was a band that toured and played what they wanted to play, etc, OUTSIDE of what some label wanted , etc.

I think it is great kids can record from home. But I don't want to hear some samples and something recorded in 20 minutes without any soul to it. It goes back to what I said about convenience. Why form a band and do shows and write songs when you can fo a quick single by yourself and post it that night?
 
  • We often underestimate the amount of payola historically because of rose colored glasses.
  • We often mis-remember what the historical charts looked like. It was not all Van Halen & Deep Purple.
  • The fact that there are currently two music distributors of note, and both take payola, is a big fucking problem.
  • I think the guy in the video's music won't move for reasons unrelated to industry structure. FUUUUK!
  • COVID was horrible for live music, doubly so because of all the liberal dipshits in the music industry. Live music is the feeder for recorded music of interest.
  • Planning to sell records via Spotify is not a feasible plan to be in the music business. It MIGHT work, but it probably won't.

I admire bulletpoints. In the olden days on the internet, I really appreciated them as sharp and consiced. Rarely do I see it these days in a non AI sense...but it is a pleasure.

The more realistic dream of circa 2000, was to own a subscription website.
People could join at $30 a year, and get all your musical output in high-res format. Complete with interactive podcasts, and the odd newsletter. I think Todd Rundgren was the first guy to hint that this was the future.
I actually played a full hour of an O2 Arena festival show from my home studio back in 2005.
