Dependability - Kemper | Dependability - AxeFx?

The first Kemper I bought had one of the buttons stuck in the "down" position, making it useless. I had to send it back for a replacement. The second one has worked fine since I received it.

I haven't followed any Kemper/Axe threads, but from where I sit, zentman asked a very legitimate question (I planned to ask the same thing until I continued to read the thread). I can't comment on his posts elsewhere, but if you take this thread for what it is, the only position he took was that redrol is talking out of his ass if he can't back up his assertion...which he's clearly failed to do by not showing how the Axe is built to lower quality standards.

FWIW, I used used an Ultra extensively (lots of gigs and studio work...it wasn't kept in my cozy man cave) for about a year and never had a bit of trouble with it. It functioned perfectly every time and I wouldn't hesitate to own the Axe II. That said, I know little about the Kemper other than functionally it seems like a cool piece of gear and I plan to check one out at some point.

Ive have been gigging my AxeII since last July or so, Took it on tour this summer and it has worked every time I turn it on...Yay!!!!

You peeps get to involved in the box you use to make noise with, unless you own stock in one of these company's why get so crazy on the inter-web's?

Short answer for the OP

Kemper shows all their user problems/questions/critique on their website.
FAS deletes most of their user problems/questions/critique

And to call the Tony McKenzie video irrelevant is another pity attempt to hide some infornation. Fact is its the only video on the net showing the inner build quality of both units. And I expect that people can decide for themselves what to think of this video. BTW there where other video's from TM but he was forced to remove them because of lawsuit threads from FAS.

So Sentman, I can smell that you are around lurking for another personal attack. And this only because your superiors have labelled me "persona non grata". I just feel sorry for ya.

Have fun on the West Coast Axe-Fest and with your room mate!

I was wondering why his Axe-Fx build quality video got censored, glad I saw it before he was threatened.

Sigh...

I will state something of a "dependability" matter experienced only in the last 24 hours.

I ended up upgrading to v.8.01 FW with the Axe-II. I ended up having that same ol' sysex dumping issue prevent me from using Axe-Edit, and the box itself. I did the usual "ask the forum" AFTER knowing I'd be directed to "search the forum" for some form of resolve. All the usual answers came out - it's your macbook pro - it's not a problem with Axe or Edit - it's a USB issue with your motherboard - yada yada yada. After spending only a while on the board, the overall cultism of the usual members and their blind praise and devotion to all things FAS becomes quite concerning to a lucid and sane individual as myself.

I would say this is a concern for anyone pondering the Axe versus the Kemper. If you're going to go Axe, expect to have to immerse yourself in amongst many kool-aid drinking fanatics when trying to get actual factual information. It's just the way it is.

And for the record, my value knob on the Axe-II has never been perfectly accurate - it doesn't "grab" immediately, it always needs to be rifled quickly left or right before grabbing value changes - only to then go back slowly one click at a time to get to the value wanted.

That's it.

And for the record, I found the sysex dump error remedy on a completely unrelated forum. Imagine.

Mo

PS: And for the record, the last bit of direction I was given was a "statement" stating that the "current version of Axe-Edit" doesn't work with anything past v.7 of the firmware. Yet, this is not considered a problem or issue. :loco:

You mean these two threads? Sounds like they really gave you the run around all right:

Um, are you my mother??

Dude, I had to search throughout the forum - found several users with the main problem (Axe-Edit sysex dumping) and there were no clear, definitive remedies to take. My fix was found on an unrelated site.

As for the value knob, ya, it's shitty that this thing doesn't work and if it's an "encoder" that needs breaking in, I suppose I can live with that. But seeing as the latest firmware upgrade doesn't mesh well with Axe-Edit, I'm forced to use the chassis controls - and they're not working properly. My concern is that in viewing a lot of the error posts, there's rarely - if ever - a concise solution given; it's always a problem on MY side of the fence. Which I find a bit weird - as a couple people actually PM'd me over there and mentioned they'd tried to get answers as well, but the threads were edited/deleted. So OBVIOUSLY I have to tread lightly.

Dude, who the hell are you and why you coming on to my lawn to take a cheap shot?? :gethim:

If you knew me, you'd know damn straight that's not my style. So chill TFO.

Mo

^ As per the thread about your encoder, it's broken. You contacted support and you should get a new one now. I had the same problem with mine and they replaced it on my Ultra two years ago.

As to Axe edit, they are rewriting the whole thing because of the bugs that keep popping up. I always used Bornes sys ex to dump stuff which was a tip I read early on.

I looked in a few of your threads and saw nothing but people trying to help you.

Are there A holes there with condescending attitudes? Yep. That being said there are some really nice guys just trying to help other users too. Just like every forum out there in internet ville. :)

Allow me to assist 'ya Mo :D

Thanks, guys, for all of the input. It looks like it's a wash in the dependability department. That's a good thing. Now I just have to make up my mind which one I want. They both look great...it's not going to be easy.

For the record, I just received my RMA number to return my Axe-II to FAS HQ for repair/replacement (under warranty, fully paid) for the value knob. Seems this was/has been an issue with many of the first run units, but since I never used that mechanism, it only became a problem - to me - today.

Props to FAS for dealing with this within 1 hour of my original email to their support department. IMHO, that's awesome customer service.

Outside of this issue - haven't had any. And the unit itself will be sorely missed during its absence.

Just fyi...this is who y'all are arguing with.

You really hit the nail on the head as to the overall vibe of that forum. There are some great, helpful people on there, but man are there a lot of sycophants. It's a weird scene. There are an equal number of people who hang on Cliff's every post and then people who ask for crazy new developments "When will we get all the Axe FX algorithms for the iphone? What about a flash drive version?" I kind of feel like the dude can't win.

I totally agree about the editor, I know they're working on redoing it but it seems like a lot of people have had problems with it all along. Given that its a big selling point, it seems like they'd prioritize it a bit more. I've been getting adept at the front panel editing but I'd much rather be able to use an editor than adjust the value of a virtual capacitor.
