I posted this last night in the friday night bangers thread. I'm not a huge rock guy and not really a Nuge guy either but I gotta say Derek, on his own, pretty much has a heavy dose of everything I like most in music. Sadly overlooked by too many people. Killer vocals even in his later years (that's rare in rock), great look and stage presence, great guitar tone, and solid n soulful chops. Seems he's mostly playing the club circuit. Wish he'd hit a club in my area cause that is a show I would take the time to see. What a gem. Salute.

Nice. I feel the same way. I don't hate Ted but his over the top stage antics annoy me. Good vocals are more important to me at a show than guitar so I def prefer Derek, plus he doesn't seem like an ADHD kid on stage, lol.

I noticed he's still gigging with Ted but also been playing with Brad Whitford of Aerosmith for quite a few years now. That's pretty cool.

Looks like he lives around Nashville, as there are quite a few of those music city roots videos of his own band performing and a bunch of his other shows appear to be around the Nashville area. It's great to see him still playing and singing so well when so many other classic rock stars are burnt out or just trying to make that retirement money. Awesome!

Agreed! The vocals is a big part of why I posted. I'm having a hard time envisioning a group not putting him on vocals. Very few musicians can both sing AND play guitar at his level. Pretty sure he what is considered a tenor vocal range, which isn't very common for male singers. His vocal tone is really nice too.

There’s a live Schenker record (One Night at Budokan) where Schenker’s singer (Gary Barden) is having a lot of trouble with the high notes. It always made me cringe to think that Derek was playing on that stage and could have saved the day by at least singing the high parts.

I'm not familiar with that material but you never know what a band's dynamics are at a given point. Holmes might not have known the parts by heart, been bitter for not being chosen as the lead, or just in a bad mood that night. A quick listen to Barden tells me I'd much rather hear Holmes on the mic tbh.

He's a really good guitarist with nice tone and taste in gear but his stage antics was too over the top for me to get into. I'm into music, not having a raccoon tail hanging out the back of my shorts and shooting bow and arrows from stage right, lol.
