Sorry for this, it was a little bit missunderstood regarding Axe Vs. Tube Amp, this is more like comparing apples and pears. If you think about in terms of portability and things like ... you don't have to load and unload rig then AxeFx is the answer - i just heard it at a friend of mine didn't spend time to tweek it but i'm more of an old fashion guy, but to quote a collegue: if you buy Axe to have a Herbert sound then go with Herbert, if you are looking for many sounds and presets then go with the Axe. And i'm very sure that is a hell of a equipment. Again sorry if i was missunderstood.

Thank you  If the only sound you want is a Herbert then the choice is clear... if you want tons of options and portability then the Axe is king.

I was in a similar spot and went with a VH4 over the AFXII. Won't bash the AFX because I've never used one, but for me, I think the amp was the way to go. I know me: I'll get stuck endlessly tweaking the thing. Always happens with modelers. Even when I'm pretty happy with the tones, I'll lose an hour screwing with some minor adjustment that really shouldn't matter to anyone. Plus, I find it's just more fun to have a big, mean tube head glowing behind me. Lastly, I always just plug straight in and have never gotten into using effects, even when I've used modelers in the past.

For others, I'm sure the Axe makes more sense. Just depends on you and how you use your gear.

herbert......you will still have it 5 years when the axe fx is deemed not state of the art

I really believe that any high powered tube head can be dialed to cut in a mix or band setting with ease. In my experience, the problems associated with this are usually caused by the EQ. I've never played a Herbie but I know it has the mid-cut feature and I'd be willing to bet that many bedroom players get a crushing bassy, lower mid sound out of this amp and then it disappears at band practice. I'll bet it could be fixed with different EQing and by not engaging the mid-cut.

Speakers play a HUGE role in cutting through a mix as well. My 400watt BR12 loaded Carvin 412 sounds amazing for recording or for jamming by myself, but live I can barely hear it over the other guitarist's SLP/1960B. Plug into my 212 with V30s and bam! Right back in the mix.

Don't know shit about EQ either.

I hear ya, I really do. But there are lots of stories about the Herbert not cutting through on the internet. You will probably not find ONE story about the UL not cutting through, see what I mean? Theres gotta be atleast something to it....Trust me, I don't want to believe it. Just want something to counteract it.

i used my herbert live and i used it with a bogner uberkab, i also had the cab mic'd on the v30 speaker and it cuts but not like a marshall or high mid amp, its really full sounding and fills the room, i worked on my settings a lot and i found that i needed to keep the master vol high and the keep the gain at noon and bass at 11:00, i had my mids at like 3:00 and treble and press around 2:00. i dialed it in kinda bright and it sounded good but i really like my other amps better live, i think if u ran the herebrt with a ultra lead it would be awesome and sound really good. the herbert is a nice amp and i like it alot but i wished the mid freq was a little higher. in the wrong hands this amp wouldn't cut thru and somebody that didn't know what they was doing could make it sound shitty and wouldn't be heard or cut thru.

WAnt to record quicklky direct with not much need for volume? Axe II

want an amp to play and enjoy the moving air? Herbert

Because the UL is less compression than the Herbert. Herbert is rounder around the edges, maybe more complex sounding and richer. UL slams you in the chest when it's loud and really pushes air. But at lower to medium volumes the Herbert is more fun to play while the UL is a bit "dry". Oh there's that word.  I used the UL for a lot of live shows and it always did well, the graphic EQ on them can be used for a KILLER lead boost, I mean volume wise you can blow the roof off places with it.

I really liked the ul when i owned them, they are nice amps, very clear sounding and like danny said slams you in the chest, i always thought of it as very percussive.
the feel and the tightness mixed with the clarity and eq made it a amp i loved to play, i think it sounded best with p50 speakers too.

Gotta go with Herbert here. Owned a Herbert and spent some time with an AFX Ultra and there is no comparison, IMO.

What do you think about the cutting through issues with the herbie jason? Lotsa stories floating around out there about this issue...

Wasn't a problem when I had mine at all. It was very nice when blended with my other guitar player's (at the time) 20th Anny Shiva.
