Not even close. Your kidding right?

Just poking fun. You know how certain terms get attached to gear, Soldano and sizzle. VHT and dry. Bogner and chewy or dark. V30's and mid spike.

There is a certain Hi-fi character about the Herber that i did notice but didn't bother me. Now Engl's really have a certain something i don't like. Wether or not the Herbert cuts through a mix is another arguement. Although when i have heard Diezels with a live band, they didn't sound. But it was only local bands so probably wa suser error. Seems like the mid cut gets abused by some guys.

I played a VH4 once, liked it, but no way for that price.
Your absolutely right. I was like that with the Engls....then I got sick of them. Then the Framus...same.
The Mark III had a great tone. Just sold it to buy new gear. Modded Marshall....love em!
Diezel has its own thing. Just sold the VH4S to pick up a Herbert. I was dialing in some PERFECT "Invasion of Privacy" tones with that VH4S......but I wanted something 'meaner' then the VH4.

Oh yeah.......its Herbie time!

AND WHAT ABOUT THE VH4 PEOPLE!!!!!!!!!!! THE ORIGINAL END ALL, BE ALL OF DIEZEL'S SIGNATURE SOUND & TONE!!!!!!!

V. :D

+1000! :rawk: AMEN brutha.

VH4 has more balls than the Herbert. A/B'd them side-by-side over the course of a few days. VH4 won. More useable mid-range (if that's what you want). Herbert as tons of low-end and gain, but VH4 just had more of a growl and raw testicular fortitude to my ears. Played both through a Mesa 2x12 and a Mesa 4x12 with V30's.

yup, I'd agree with the assessment that the VH4 has more growl, but I think it's due to it's mid-range voicing (relatively speaking) when compared to the Herbert.

However in terms of 'balls' - it's hard to fuck with 180W. IMHO, the ballz award goes to the Herbert because nothing I've ever played, except maybe a 200W Marshall Major, comes close to blowing the doors off a club IMHO.

It shows you how sound is a subjective thing. I got rid of my Herbert after having it for 2 months and I'm much happier with my VH4.

I have heard the term sterile applied to the Diezels before. But I think that might have to do with bedroom levels? Gotta crank them to get the goods.

JJB - too funny! in fact, I go through the exact same - Herbert vs VH4, and ultimately wind up playing the JVM, the Einstein (mostly) or one of the early 70's metal panel Marshalls (recording not gigging of course - can you imagine? )

The VH4 has a definitely "middy" Marshally kind of "cut" that is not naturally voiced in the Herbert. I have been able to get 'close', but I agree on the natural voicing issue that you're referencing! all good!

See now, i have heard the complete opposite. Some guys think it sounds great low but get's wierd when you turn it up. I played the Herbert for about a week when i had a IIC+ to compare it to. I thought the Herbert sounded great at low levels, i didn't get to crank it so i don't know for myself how it really reacts. But overall i liked it. I still liked the lead channel of the IIC+ more by a little bit, but the Herbert has a great 2nd channel as well and it's a lot more versatile. The IIC+ sounded more angry, raw, and a little more lively. The Herbert was smoother, more refined, more bottom end. In the end though, it was a blast playing through them both.

My VH4S sounded HUGE when cranked. Never played it at bedroom levels.
Got that Herbert coming in next week.......and I am going to crank that bastard like there is no tomorrow!

Sadly.....no.
Something had to give. I wasnt financially able to keep both.
and that Herbert sounded so damn good....

Diezel are obviously awesome sounding, though IMO if you are over in America they are too expensive and I have seen too many functionality issues . I honestly think that the only amp that sounds very different from other amps out there is the VH4 (which I absolutely love but you want to make sure you try it first, it is a love or hate amp because of its unique character).

My opinion is if you are here in America, there are better options for the money, some even with lifetime warranties.

If you want clear, tight gain with oomph I always say to check out these 4 guys-

Titan
Mako
Baron (can even tweak everything to your tastes)
Peters

All 4 of those guys you can talk to directly, have good build quality (or for Mako up to NASA quality   ) and have excellent customer service.

The Titan and Baron have clean channels that I thought were excellent, and IMO warmer and more "organic" sounding than the Herbert I tried. I have also heard good things about Peters halo channel as well. I don't know enough about Mako's clean channel to be honest. Either way they all make killer amps.
