Driftwood Atlas miced demo by Reza

I’m telling you, this is not what this amp sounds like unboosted, at all. Many people know I’ve known mark for 25 years, he’s been my best friend for decades, I know exactly what he was going for with this thing. This amp is much, much looser than this when plugging straight in with no boost in, muddy even. Mark wanted it that way. He very much loves being able to shape the input section with pedals etc, which is why the recto is such an incredible amp to me, and what he loves about it as well. So, take this demo, like all reza’s “demos”, with a grain of salt. This still has reza’s “signature sound” in it that are in all his videos. He’s got some kind of super backed off pickup, that’s the only way he could make this thing sound like this without a boost…the lead stuff sounds killer though.
I appreciate your comments here...Mark is certainly an expert in his field and can request any tonal characteristics he wants from his signature amp. That said, releasing a high-gain amplifier that is too loose and "even muddy" straight out of the box, and plugged straight in seems antithetical to purpose and counterintuitive. Again, to each his own.

Are we supposed to all know record producers now? I can barely keep up with every YouTube that has signature gear these days. Now I have to learn the names of all the nerds behind the DAWs?
Well no but it’s easy af to find him using google, he has a wiki page for christs sake 😂

I realize not everyone keeps up with who produces what these days, trust me it took me a long time to get into that side of music as well. However, mark has done everything from trivium, to killswitch engage, Nile, dying fetus, cannibal corpse, decide, remixed megadeth, white chapel, Krisiun, black dahlia murder , all that remains, devildriver, job for a cowboy, death angel, god forbid, unearth…I mean it’s an extremely extensive list and these are just off the top of my head. His career spans 22 years at this point, so not someone that’s new by any means.

I’m sure mark will explain better eventually, but clearly the amp was a big, if not the biggest hit at NAMM for a reason. Mark just can’t stand amps that are super tight upfront. In his eyes it leaves him with no room to change a lot of the things he looks for when getting guitar tones. Again, maybe it doesn’t make sense when I say it like this, when we hear it properly and not by someone like reza, I bet it’ll all make a lot more sense.

I know I looked him up. Black Dahlia Murder is a cool one for me. Just trying to be funny. I actually think the amp sounded great even in Reza's video.

Mark Lewis? Are you serious?

I looked him up. I recognize the names of 3 or 4 of the bands on his resume. And of those, I've only heard songs from two of them. And of those, I'm only a fan of one of them. I don't know the names of producers or mixers or engineers. I guess I'm not cool enough lol. I just don't have the energy or care enough to research that kind of thing.

Didn't Headfirst do a signature amp for Joe Barresi? I first learned his name from his work with Tool. What's next... a signature amp for the guy who works the sound booth?

Signature gear is typically for people who want to get that sound... the sound of their idols. Some 17-year-old has a poster on his wall of a band, so he buys the guitarist's signature guitar. But a signature amp from someone who uses other amps that anybody can get from Guitar Center? I don't get it. A producer loves using Rectifiers. So he has a signature amp from another company? And I'm supposed to know who he is and want to buy that amp instead of the amp he actually used on all his famous records? Huh?

I played the amp. I think it sounds good. 100% sounds like a modded recto.

Keeping the gain at around 11 o clock keeps it plenty tight. But it’s not super saturated. If you crank the gain up, the low end starts getting loose quickly.

I preferred the gain set low, to keep it tight, and then add the on-board boost for the saturation.

I’m pretty picky with modern amps but this one was cool.

Here’s an iPhone clip of me jamming on it:
