Driftwood Atlas miced demo by Reza

Here’s a clip of a Marshall with an SLO type circuit in it that I did. It’s from today. Similar circuit to a recto, but there are differences such as filtering etc…

Interested to hear opinions on this one on whether or not you’re hearing the same things.

That amp sounds waaaaay better. But there are similar recording chain artifacts. At least that amp has some mids.

You’re being modest - I was thinking more along the lines of a broken PA horn.

The thing is, the alnico creambacks are already a thin but smooth type of speaker, and they're finicky

and using a 57 relatively straight on is just exacerbating all the inherent issues with it - hence all the hate for the tones in this thread and every Reza thread

It's always been a speaker you need to massage with a bit of careful mic placement and EQ

You can get them sounding pretty good for high gain but its a bunch of work - not like a V30 or something where you can just slap a 57 anywhere and it immediately sounds like all the records you listen to

I think my favourite speaker personally are 70th anniversary G12H30s. Second favourite would be 55Hz G12H30 (non-70th) for a little less top end.

I’d choose the Karnivore for 3rd place over a V30 anymore. It’s even easier to slap a mic on it and get great tones. So many others have stated it’s studio tuned right out of the box.

There's a million great speakers that work for high gain, and honestly they are in every price range.

But that's why I made the comment I made above -
It's unbelievable to me that someone could play every high gain amp in existence, and decide they were only going to use one type of speaker, and choose those speakers

Because the alnico creams are very specifically difficult to record and difficult to wrangle in a recording setting. Out of literally every celestion out there, it may be the most user-unfriendly for recording that has ever existed in their catalogue. Just a mind boggling decision to make.

I get it for an "in the room" speaker - they tend to sound like greenbacks with some high-end rolloff in the room, but close miced it's just a wacky choice that seems like "everything expensive is the best" noob shit. Like you made the decision without actually having used or worked with any of this guitar gear in a professional or high stakes setting like gigging or recording.

Yes. Same thing. It sounds like every other video he does. It sounds like plugging a guitar into a Metal Zone and then directly into the sound card of a computer and hitting record in Garage Band. Just fizzy and lifeless and strident. It's not the amp, though. Don't worry!

Yeah Alnico Creams are tricky. I like them quite a bit with some amps and in certain situations, but they can be a little spitty and harsh if not careful. If you compare the graph to that of a V30, the Alnico Cream has more in that 4k-5k region. I don't think graphs always tell the whole story; however, IME the Alnico Creams do seem prone to get a bit harsh in that frequency range.

When micing one on axis with a 57, I almost always point it to catch less of the dustcap than I would on a V30. At least that's what I do with high gain amps. Sometime I'll even point it just outside of the dustcap altogether, so that the 57 is pointing directly on the cone with the side of the 57 lining up with the point where the cone and dustcap meet. Then I back it up a little to get the tone to open back up.

Sounds like just using a Ribbon would solve a lot.

It's possible to dial that out with alnico creambacks but its a really laborious process

IIRC the last time someone had some in a cab and did the "its my rig i gig with and that's what we're going to record with" thing, I ended up using a 57 like 4" off axis and then a royer 121 dead center, and it was still a little thin and brittle for my tastes

I like Alnico Creams for the extra low end they have compared to a more traditional Greenback, but they definitely require a Greenback pairing to help with the mids and high end...volumes get troublesome though.

Can't say I have extensive experience with micing mine but it definitely sounds great in the room with the right settings.

Every now and again the speakers half suit the amp. Never really sounds good. But occasionally passable. For me it’s when he turns on the delay pedals that drives me nuts. Sounds so messy and weird. But he does get some great amps through his place unfortunately so I find myself watching now and again.

I am definitely interested in the amp and reached out to US dealers with no response. Anyone pickup a Driftwood from a dealer that can be recommended? I heard other demos of this amp and seems a fun one to try.

That sounds really powerful. I would love to try it. Sounds much better than a Slo..and the machine gun pms sound very tight and fun
