I felt the same way for a long time, until I listened to his early stuff before his blues period. Not that his blues stuff isn’t great, but his rock lead playing has an intensity I’ve yet to hear equaled. It’s like someone’s holding a gun to his head and telling him he better play with everything he’s got or else.

The thing about Moore, and perhaps why he’s overlooked a lot, is because his songs aren’t that strong. They’re not bad by any stretch of the imagination, but they’re all kinda...blah. I feel the same about Micheal Schenker’s music. Both are phenomenal players, but both wrote decent, but not great, songs. That’s just my humble opinion.

These days with YT you can hear whatever is available from an artist. If you haven’t heard anything that you like, he’s just not for you.

I am a boring, conventional, mainstream, khaki wearing, older dude and my choices probably reflect that...but in terms of influence impact in the genres that i listen to i would probably go with:

- hendrix (
- evh
- chuck berry (‘rock and roll’ went mainstream in a lot of ways thru him)
- clapton (may be boring now but really was the archetype of the rock guitar gunslinger with his marshalls on 10 and les paul)
- malmsteen (i dont listen to his stuff, but...)
