ENGL, EVH, JVM ???

I really like my JVM but after hearing what Fortin can do to the EVH I would go that route in a nyc second, damn the thing rips.

I think that yo uhave to nail down what you are looking for because the all of the amps that you mentioned are all different flavors.

IMHO, the JVM covers alot of ground in both modern and classic Marshall tones. To my ears, the KK 800 is anything but classic Marshall. Great sounding head( Ironic considering who its named after) but to me, its very modern Marshall...

There are opinions and there are facts...its a fact that the 5150 and 5150 III are very different amps that essentially sound and feel nothing alike.

BTW, you forgot "IMHO" when you stated "there are better options available with his price range" :poke:

or change the period to a comma and read the rest of the damn sentence. im not here to petty argue a bunch of pussy point opinions around a tree. I did not say they were identical, only that with owning a 5150, a JSX, a GH50L, and loads of other amplifiers that the tonal benefits of a 5150 III are null.

in a music forum there is only one fact - not one single amplifier on this planet sounds better than the other, only that each is guaranteed to sound different. However, under a microphone you cannot tell the difference between a 5150 III and a 5150, and a 5150 II, if you think you can then by all means go PM Greg, username lolzgreg, and have him post his 5150 comparison recording. For $2,000 the dude has no reason to own a 5150 for its clean or for its lead channel when a 5150 can do it fine and the others cover the areas it would be useful for.

am i saying its better? worse? it sucks? Im comparing the OP's predicament in my decision, not just amplifier versus amplifier.

I dunno, I played a JVM 410 today I really thought that the high-gain tones were a bit sterile.

The JVM seems pretty versatile... it's better than the TSL100's in my opinion, but kind of disappoints the same way the TSL's did to me. It's really good, but just not quite spot on or something.

FWIW, I started playing a 5150III recently and have not been happier with an amp. It can pretty much cover anything and sounds great at any setting. Everything else have i just gathering dust now.

I just had a JVM210 and really, I wanted to love it, but there was just something about it I couldn't bond with. The high gain seemed waaaay too spongey even with the gain turned down. I got some cool tips from various people that did help but in the end we just couldn't bond.

I think that's usually the case with amps that are trying to do everything at once. They're okay to good at everything, exceptional at nothing. People buy them for their versatility, not because they have some excellent inherent feature about them. The JVM series seem to be that way. Marshall was going for an all-in-one amp, and for a lot of people that works.

I've tossed around the idea of a Peters, but I would need to extend my budget. My friend owns a few and uses his amps exclusively. I've played them and thought they were very nice. But I never really felt much gas for one.
The Fireball may be a one trick pony, but I'm not really looking for versatility in one amp.
I played the new Powerball and it was great. But again too much for my needs.
I guess I'm looking for an amp that will have its own tone compared to what I already have. I know a Peters will accomplish that, and Engl too.

You'd better choose wisely, or Mike will never let you live it down. :) In his own subtle way, that is. Mike's good at that.

If you ever want to compare amps, let me know. I don't make an amp for everyone so I'm not beneath admitting it, and direct comparisons are the best way to know. I live near the L&M that used to be Mother's Music. You can come check out the amps with a wide variety of cabs, guitars etc. and compare to my roommate's other amps (Triple Rec, Invader) if I ask him nicely...perhaps asking him with beer. :) And you're welcome to bring other amps/cabs/etc. here for comparison.

Just so you know, my amps have changed a bit lately... (Mike hasn't gotten the latest mods, since he's been busy with his house.)
Thanks for the invite James. That would be a great help. I know how pleased Mike has been ever since using your amps. He has told me that he thinks I should look into getting a Peters, (in his own subtle way) although he also knows that I'm generally pretty satisfied with the tones I'm currently getting. But I'm always looking to expand. I like simplicity, so a single channel amp would be ideal. Versatility isn't really on my radar. Just a big, fat, responsive & throaty tone. I guess I've got some thinking to do...

Thanks for all the feedback and first hand experiences with the JVM guys. That insight is really useful to me. I'm starting to lean towards the fact that it may be too compresssed and stale sounding for me. I'm looking for a more complex high gain tone. I'll have to give it one final test drive before coming to a conclusion on that.
I think ENGL may be out of the equation since the local dealer here seems to have raised the prices of the FB100 and Blackmore by $450 each! In fact the whole ENGL line went up. Total crap.
Anyone have any opinions on the H&K Trilogy?

Why not an Uberschall?

This. Used Rev Blue Uberschalls can be found for around $1600. A bit more for Twin Jets. If you're looking for unique and complex distortion, the Uberschall has it! I'm a bit biased of course, but they're definitely worth a try...
