The "Brown Sound" thing is soooooo dumb.

Um nooooooooo

Ed has used it to describe his tone in other interviews (even Brian May's). Ed just likes to change it up in interviews to keep us on our toes.

Either way, it has become a household term that we use to describe his early Marshall tones. Relax and enjoy.

Great demo Pete!

It's Alex's drums that are "Brown", not EVH's guitar.

If you are an EVH fan, then try to get it right for once, otherwise who cares, Brown, Blue, Pink whatever.

Eddie Van Halen: That’s funny, because people took that whole “brown sound” thing totally out of context. I was never talking about my guitar tone. I was talking about [his brother and Van Halen bandmate] Alex’s snare drum. I’ve always thought Alex’s snare drum sounds like he’s beating on a log. It’s very organic. So it wasn’t my brown sound. It was Alex’s.

Billboard: Do you have synesthesia?

Eddie Van Halen: I think I read something about this. What is that, exactly?

It’s the ability to see sound, which is supposedly why you call your guitar tone the “brown sound.” You supposedly see the color brown when you hear that specific tone.

Then how did this confusion happen?

Eddie Van Halen: It happened years ago. People would ask me about his drumming, and the only way I could explain it was that it had a very brown sound. I’m glad you brought this up, actually, so people can finally understand what I was talking about.

But even so, you must realize that this was a weird way to describe a sound. You thought his drums sounded like a log, so you describe the color of the log itself? Why didn’t you say it was a wooden sound, or a log sound?

Eddie Van Halen: I don’t know. It’s an organic sound. Brown is an organic color.

This makes me suspect you do have synesthesia. Does sound always have a color to you?

Eddie Van Halen:
Alex’s snare drum does, definitely. Otherwise I wouldn’t have called it brown.

Do you see colors with other sounds?

Eddie Van Halen: I guess I’ve never thought about it. To me, music is all about feeling. But in terms of trying to visualize the feeling? I don’t know.

That is just stunning playing. Sounds like a distortion pedal rather than an OD/boost. Sounds GREAT.

I was trying to get a more classic sound plinking around last nigh with my NAD.

One close SM57 on my 2203 clone and some stacked overdrives.

Here is a phone/room clip with a TS9

I remember talking with someone and mentioned the brown sound..... They thought I was talking about the brown note.... A very different thing.

Not trying to hi jack this thread, but for those of you that have played both, which is better...Suhr Riot or this EVH 5150 pedal ?

Pete makes everything sound good and this is no exception... so technically yes, I am sure it can get that sound. However, everywhere else on youtube where there is a demo, it sounds like a compressed toy compaired to the real amp. Fantastic playing though, I agree with everyon else!
True all 'dat. The vid of the two English guys has HORRIBLE tone... Pete makes it sound AMAZING...

Thanks guys- really, I put all the controls on 5, plugged it into my PT100 CH1, and hit one chord and was like, ooh shit- nice! And you can see in the vid, I'm not far off from those settings. I dunno HOW people make some of this stuff sound so bad, frankly. Anyway, thanks for watching!

There is so much BS about EVH on the net, that a little less wouldn't hurt.

Just as well EVH couldn't give a crap about the BS, otherwise he'd have a full time job trying to remove it from the net.

Nice! The answer is simple. We guys can't play for shit compared to you, so everything sounds like crap compared to your videos!

Im using mine to Jam with the band tomorrow through whatever clean channel they have at the studio, it looks cool but I haven't plugged it in yet, tomorrow...

That pedal does sound pretty good for that kinda tone... The thing I don't understand is why people are still after that very overrated guitar tone that EVH got?? It was absolutely drenched in reverb and I think that was a big part of why it sounded like it did.

I used the pedal today to jam with the band and it sounded good, I played it through a fender DRRI, its seems to be a little fuzzier than the heads and LBX but it was still better than any pedal I own at the moment, Im sure the bogner pedlas are nice too though, the noise gage it an awesome feature and you can get low to mid to high gain tones with the turn of the nob, the nobs are very usable as is the gain it doesn't get muddy as you turn it up like I feel MXR pedals sometimes do, very well designed pedal....

IMO...don't hesitate on this pedal. ...and for the record (with maximum respect) I'm not an EVH'er. The pedal does get it and so much more. If one is slightly on the fence about this, I highly recommend hopping down and getting this pedal.

Liked the Mad Professor 1 demo. But wow on this one too. Thanks Pete!
