Expensive cables are BS

Personally, I do think they make a difference. I noticed it mostly in high end loss and noise with cheaper cables. I actually prefer the high end loss of my PW cable over the Lava Soar cable on the run to my board. However, I greatly prefer the Lava patch cables on my board and cable to the amp, as they are much quieter than my cheaper patch cables.

Lava cable sucks IMO. Their solder less stuff is the worst cable I've ever dealt with.

I'm pretty middle of the road on this one, I have quite a few high end cables by several different makers, most of them listed above, but I have never heard the difference I was hoping to hear by the way they were hyped by those who sold them. I hear a very slight difference at most.. very slight. Believe me, I wanted to hear what I was told I would hear
I'm in the "I think more than half of it is bullshit" camp
I still use whirlwind cables that are 20+ years old all the time, and save the others for critical crap (recording)
The last time I was in a GC and they started in with all the hype, I told the guy if he could pick out that cable 4 out of 5 times compared to regular cables, I'd buy it....... he declined my offer

My take is: If you don't invest on professional cables, that means you don't care about your tone. Since I turned to Evidence Audio, Lava, and Mogami, all my rigs took a huge step forwards. You can only realize about how much tone you're missing when you go for the best cables you can buy and change the whole cabling in you rig.

or it means you've been at it long enough to know the difference is minimal compared to the hype that surrounds it

I thought the OP was talking about the actual speaker wire in the cab. I use 18 gauge lamp chord. My wife now enjoys sitting in the dark.

There is a lot of hype in the very expensive cables. But the mid-priced stuff is worth it.

For speaker cables from the amp to cab, I got the local music shop to make some up for me. Great quality and they were cheap too.

The speaker wires inside the cab- I wired them up myself with thick 4-strand copper wire out of an industrial-grade extension lead. I guess it suffices as lamp cord.

The pedalboard-to-amps cables are just off the shelf 10m guitar leads. They work fine.

I do have Lava Cable for my guitar lead and pedalboard patch cables. You just have to make sure you build them properly, otherwise they'll short out or have loose connections. I bought a Soar cable for my guitar-to-pedalboard cable and it works great.

i agree. i am pretty sure he was speaking about speaker wire in the cabs.

The more you spend on cables the better you play. Chicks especially dig Mogami. :D

Me, I use jumper cables and I reek of tone.

Not sure about speaker wire, but instrument cable definitely makes a difference. Better or worse is up to the listener, but changing out cables does result in slightly different tone and feel. I switch between a few brands, including Lava. I like em.

Quality of the cable matters. Whether instrument, speaker or mic, they matter. End of argument.

:D

If I have some free time this week, and if there is any interest in it, I can track DI's in the studio using various types and quality of cables. Or try it yourself. Listening to a straight DI off of a guitar or bass, it's incredibly apparent what the quality of the cable does to the overall tone and signal quality.

did evh, srv, jh, hell anyone who's tone people admire use "high end" cables? i think not. were ANY of their pedals true bypass? i doubt it.

I believe the average cables of that time were of higher quality then the average quality of today. The cables they were using are very likely what we consider high end today because the race for the absolute cheapest product wasn't in full force yet. Just my opinion though.

Different brand guitar cables do sound different without a doubt.....better or worse is subjective.

Without a doubt...to the point you'd have to be damn near deaf not to notice.

Luckily for me, I seem to like cheaper cables best :D

To my ears, I did find they make a difference. Whether the difference is worth the cost to you is subjective. I made a little comparison a few years ago:

Just sayin.

You are an amateur, I use welding cable and my electrons are loaded with tone :D :D

Guitar cables make a huge difference.

Speaker cables might as well.

Where understanding for me stops ist shelling off 100s$ or 1000s$ for power cables or even 9V FX power cables.

I had the same issue with a wiring harness from Lava a number of years ago, but Mark is great people and will take care of you. I had an Evidence Audio cable go bad and Mark offered a replacement before I could even tell him that I couldn't find the paypal receipt for it.

I certainly don't buy expensive cables, and just can't get behind it. It's not total BS, but there are a lot of people preaching serious hype about it. If I were going to spend more money on cabling, it'd be because of build quality and not necessarily sound quality (although many will argue they're one in the same with re: to cabling).

If there's a tonal difference, use your ears and tweak from there. If there's a tonal difference that a nudge in the presence/eq can't fix, I haven't heard it yet. You eventually start getting into EJ "battery" territory after a while, stop playing, and start obsessing...and then maybe start a cable company

did a shootout with zaolla two rock monster georgeL planet waves and evidence and an off the shelf gc cable

evidence was the clear winner and all sounded unique but it was apparent that planet waves was good enough for me without the high price tag
i had a george l guitar cable prior but the solderfree end was tempermental

speaker and instrument cables do make a difference
