So you like the stock tubes? Or are you talkin other Chinese tubes?

I think the stock preamp tubes sound fine...especially if you are having it modded, but the power tubes should be replaced with JJ, EH or equivalent regardless. New power tubes really make a difference.

Thanks guys for all of the help. Still perplexed over how good this thing sounds stock. Maybe I should hook my Redplate Blackverb back up for a reality check...it's a way different amp that cost way more than 10X the price of the JC.
