The thing I've liked about both the Mark and the Recto is their ability to change as I evolve. I'm not locked into one or two sounds and everytime I get experimental I learn something new.

I bought my first Mark years before Metallica used them. I agree with danyeo about the settings they use. It confused me and several of my friends. The settings in the photographs do not sound that good on my rig. I have tried them on a III & IIC+ also and did not work for me.

Because Metallica never used a simple C+ into cabinet setup. Their C+ amps were always used in conjunction with outboard parametric EQs, BBE sonic maximizers, Rocktron Juice Extractor, somehow mixed with ADA preamps/EQs (perhaps setting the C+ to sound good blended with the ADA gear, not on its own ?), slaved into Marshall power sections, Boogie power amps, the list goes on.

I've been told by a reliable source that the slaving into Marshall power sections is internet lore. They blended with Marshall amps. That's why you can get very close to their sound by simply using the Mesa Marks and some EQing. Of course only they really know. Plus, after MOP, the mark 2C+'s were modded by boogie.

I had most of that stuff also...... I was never really trying to copy their sound. But did have a neighbor who spent a lot of time trying to do that. I do like the early stuff.... And they have always been good live.

I think I read Flemming Rasmussen himself confirmed the C+ slaved into Marshall setup for MOP. Definitely slaved into Boogie power amps for AJFA.

On another note, do you also go by the name of 'guitarnobody' on this forum ?

I wanted to wait until I had it before I said anything, but just grabbed a Mark IV head for $675. Good shape and works ok. It has 6V6 tubes in it though so I want to replace them. What's everyone using for power and pre amp tubes. This is the B version because it has 2 returns on the FX loop.

Great score! I use two 6L6s and EL34s in my power amp section and keep my pre amp tubes just as their supposed to be. I think they're Mesa/Boogie tubes in there right now. For the most part I found that there was minimal differences between different brands of tubes in the MK IV. Maybe others will disagree but get yourself some EL34s and some 6L6s and see what combo works best for you.

I just scored a Mark IV. The price was already great but I may get it for a really sick price because the guy said a tube blew on it.

I know the red stripe III is supposed to be really close to the IIC+ but when I had a IV and IIC+ together I thought they were pretty close. Hey, one time I fired up blue stripe III next to a IIC+ I had and a few guys liked the III better.

Awesome Dan! I love the IV! Easily one of my favorite amps ever.

That is a great deal.... :)

I have Mesa 6L6 STR 420. I bought about 70 preamp tubes from Mesa in the 80's and use them in my IV and Tremoverb. I would probably get tubes from Mesa asking them what they recommend. Mine sounds pretty different when I change different preamp tubes.

I did like Tung Sol preamp and Wing C 6L6 in it......
