Does any one on the forum have any idea what gear Brian tilse used on fights war of words album to get his rythem sound. I think he played the ampeg vl1000 but I was wondering if anyone knows what kind of gear he used to push that amp so hard (eq’s, od’s, etc) to get such a brutal sound

I had a vl1002 back in the day. It had a lot of gain, but I always tightened it up with a boss overdrive. Had a five way mid shift knob, and could get real brutal, when it wasn’t busy blowing up or eating transformers. God I hated that amp.

I have herd a lot about the vl series amps being unreliable I have been lucky so far with mine (knock on wood) the only issue I had was the bag that is attached to the roof of the head shell that holds the reverb unit had started to fall on to the tubes and I was playing one day and started to smell what smelled like something was burning luckily I caught it in time and was able to fix it

I always thought they used the Ampeg VH140C to record that album... am I wrong? ;)

I think you’re right, but they were hustling the vl’s in all the ads iirc.

I’ve always had that suspicion as well but even in their live rigs it’s distinctly the vl1000s on stage but they could have just had the vh140 back stage

The article they did in Guitar World back then said it was the vl-1002 but as stated it could just be for the ad purposes. From what I remember those were killer sounding amps though just had some issues.
