The funniest part though is most people are chasing classic Marshall tone with every amp except a classic Marshall. Anderson's pretty much make Fenders feel like a dimestore Squire.

True +2 , if you want marshall tones, get a Marshall!

but one can argue the best tone ever caught on tape during the 80s was a MK III Coli slaved into a Boogie 400 watt mother fucker.

Interesting.
Nope that is a horrid tone! He just used so many fx you could barely hear any tone.

I have to agree. I love Sykes/Whitesnake, but I actually prefered the Slide it In tone over that 87' album. Just not my cup of tea, i'd rather hear Pat travers/Thrall swirly chorused out tone than that. which was cool actuallly.

agrred.i think Slide it in was a great album.i listen to it pretty regularly.

I love the tones on that album, but you're hearing Mickey Moody and not Sykes. Sykes only played the solos on the US release of Slide It In...all the riffs are still Moody.

yep. I really loved Moody's raw tone/riffs on Saints and Sinners as well. which is probably my favorite Whitesnake Album. Coverdale sounds amazing on that and and Ian Paice/ Jon Lord were swingin!

For me personally, the absolute pinnacle of electric guitar tone was VH1 - Fair Warning (maybe throw the outro of "Drop Dead Legs" on that pile). So yeah... it was Marshalls for me.

I grew up on Marshalls too, but I used a Mk Mesa for about 12 years in there and didn't touch a Marshall for those 12 years. Went Marshall again for about ten years and now I have my Mesa Triple Rec and don't see much playing time on the Marshall for the near future!

With the right Mesa I can be completely satisfied with my tone. The Triple is right there. Freaking huge, rich, fat with TONS of sustain. Low notes bloom and it has balls for days. Top end cuts like a knife and the bite is tremendous. Loop is great. Not perfect but works well with delay or reverb.
When the band kicks in with the Mesa is like a freight train.

With the Marshall it's great, but not quite the mass and fullness on the low end which I prefer these days.
