I am still awaiting to find out what exactly a hard rock/metal band consists of.

They are two completely different things to me.

I'd say bands like Down, Disturbed & Hail the Villain etc.

To me the line is so blurry and the band's sound isn't one thing so it's best to just say hard rock/heavy metal than to get into super detailed subgenre stuff but most of the music is "80's sleaze" a la LA Guns, Faster Pussycat, etc with a few "modern" sounding drop tuned songs, DCG hard rock songs, a Black Sabbath medley, a Queensryche song to showcase our singer etc

Just make sure you have a volume boost for solos.
Ya I have my rig all set, my Maxon 808 is my solo boost, the amp has a built in volume boost but I like a little more dirt and compression in my lead tone, I'm having him mess around with something like an OD-1 for the solos he will take

What's your friend currently playing through? When you say upgrade...?

For hard rock & metal & without breaking the bank, i'd be looking at a Peavey 5150 II.
As a bedroom dude he never looked into amps so he's been playing a Spyder III or something since we were in high school (granted that was only like 5 years ago but still)... He's more of an old school blues rocky dude, favorite bands are more in the AC/DC and Cinderella vein than my Van Halen so I told him to find a cheap DSL50. It's not the best but then again he isn't investing a few grand into something that's almost useless in his house if the band thing doesn't pan out

So you say rhythm should have lowered mids than the leads? I figure it's gonna come down to EQing everything right over having different gear since, again, a lot of bands we adore (Kix, Ratt, etc) both guitar players are playing the same amp with slightly different gear

It depends on the cab and the amp but i usually like recto like sound with a 5150 like sound
We usually mix a boosted vh4 with a 5150 II
I use painkiller pickup and my other guitarist an emg81
