Not gear related, but I bought something for $20 from someone on craigslist today on my way to work. I pull up next to the dudes car, and he's on his phone. I look at him and give him the "sup" head nod....nothing. So I get out of my car and look at him, keep in mind it's raining, and he finally waves. So I go over to his car, his window is down, he's still on his phone, and the thing I bought is sitting on his dash near the window. Dude still doesn't say anything, so I pick the thing up, check it out and hand him my $20... Where do these people come from?
But anyway back to the topic of gear sales. I think the biggest problem is that people buy shit that they can't afford at the time they buy it. I've done this several times, but if I do I always use interest free credit. That gives me several months to sit on my gear because I know when I sell it it'll pay for what I just bought. I bought a Rhodes Colossus a couple months ago, and I needed to sell my JP to pay for most of it. I put the Rhodes on a credit card that had no interest for 18 months, and I sat on the JP at my price for a month until it sold. I could have and would have waited longer if I needed to until someone wanted my guitar at my price, which I though was fair at $2k for that top/color.
At the same time there was a guy selling a JP who had his for like $2400 or something. It was overpriced, but the dude legit dropped it like a grand in one week. Who the hell does that? That's where all these low ballers, and the I want shit for free mentality comes from on guitar forums. Now that dude could have had an emergency or whatever to pay for, but shit like that happens all of the time. People are not having consistent medical emergencies lol. They're buying shit with no way to pay for it, or their car, rent, whatever, and so they need to move their gear instantly to make some kind of payment.
If more people stuck to their prices we wouldn't have this problem, but so many people just want to move stuff that they blow up the value of used gear.
