Gear plans 2026

There's at least 40 amp companies I'll probably never get to try in my lifetime. I've just accepted it.

I feel grateful that I had a "lot" (from the perspective of a guy who played through a tube amp for the first time in 2015) of amps to tinker out with over the course of my playing life, having started seriously only when I was 19/20. Soldano, Mesa Boogie, Marshall, Engl, VHT, PRS, Victory, Diezel.

There are so many I haven't experienced, like Orange, Bogner, Omega Ampworks, Driftwood, Revv, etc.

All said and done though, I think it's great to have been able to find "my sound" (whatever that means, given how your mood can define your perception of tone). I really think I learnt how to dial in amps as well, and of late, I think my recordings have also benefited.

There are just too many for me to reasonably purchase and hold onto with valid reasons, with just about 20 years of working life left (ugh).

All that stuff I tried, however, led me to the conclusion however that rack units maketh the man, at least in my case. So much fun to do odd pairings.

I could do with another Diezel VH4 or maybe a VHX though, hahaha. It never ends.

I hope to get back to practicing with a purpose and really learning Logic ProX to increase productivity in the little time I have to use it. Been using it for years, but it goes so deep and I’m lazy…
😊

Since I already have more than I need, I'm focusing on learning more about how to utilize the gear I have. Since I purchased a new pair of studio monitors (my first professional studio monitors) I am hearing my amps, FX and mics in ways I never heard before (some not all that great and I thought they were). Now my focus is to start fresh and learn how I can get them into the DAW. This is forcing me to play much more and LISTEN as opposed to just sitting down and cutting tracks. It's been a double edge sword because now I listen to my live sounds with a totally different ear and mindset. I don't use any modelers, everything is tube or analog so the change has to start there. Once I get that solved I can let the new tones and sounds work their way to the DAW.

Listening was one of the hardest things I learned, mostly because I needed to break through my preconceptions. I also think it was one of the most important things I learned. And most rewarding. I still hear new things in music I've been listening to my entire life. Good monitors are essential.

Congrats on your recent acquisition!

Get rid of some stuff.
Anyone want to help me choose what to axe?
It has been a week. I haven't chosen anything yet, and no one offered to help. I hope next week is more productive.

Actually! I think it would be great to repurpose my old MacBook Pro to be a standalone studio recorder. I think I'd have to wipe the hard drive, and install a different OS. Anyone ever done that?

Leveled frets last week. Crowned and polished them last night.

Finish my Jazzmaster HH partscaster, sell a few amps I’m not using, hopefully end up with another cool amp and an Explorer b4 the year is done

I'm looking for something different from my current guitars.

I've been looking at Kiesels, again; and asked them (via email) about an Allan Holdsworth model with piezo bridge on their headless hipshot trem bridge; they got back to me the same day, in a few hours stating they no longer do piezo bridges.

I'm not finding anything different/better that's as versatile as my EBMM Majesty 6. This guitar will be getting a GK-5 pickup, and I don't want to use one of my current guitars, however I'd put it on one of my Kaizens, but the space between the bridge and bridge pickup is too tight vs the Majesty.

Not in any hurry, as I have 13-pin / GK-3 guitars.

Not looking for a full on custom build either.

What monitors did you get?

2026 plans... be content with the gear that I already have. It's a long shot, but that's what I'm going to attempt to do. I can pretty much cover anything I want to play with what I already own.
