It's just a hobby and shouldn't consume someone. Get a job and get outside of the house and do something with said person's life.

Where do you draw the line of free will and parental coaching? If he's not out having sex, getting drunk, involved in drugs, and making good grades, then at his age that is all that should matter.
This exact point of view could also apply to computer or console gamers.
If the parents helped purchase any of that gear, which they did, then they have no room to speak about coaching. What reverse psychological advantage does helping someone obtain a goal only to confiscate it from them if they dont follow your ideals? That just means you suck as a parent and need materialized objects to get a point across.
I have been in this predicament and the easiest thing to do is to move out. If the kid is treating it like a hobby and not an obscurity to life's every day requirements then i see no problem with it. If the kid is not working or pulling his weight with bills then there is a problem indeed and the goal mindset needs to be changed, but the controlling attitude is the wrong way to go about it.

If I raised a kid and bought the kid, say, a bike, obtaining the bike wouldn't be the sole goal. And there would be rules to go along with the bike just as there would be at least some rules that would go along with music gear, game systems, etc... Setting bounds is a proper part of parenting IMO.
Regarding the video, I'd agree the lady goes way overboard. But I also say none of us knows both sides of the full story. The lady should be able to get her point across with far less talking, in any case.![]()
