Not at all .... this place is based on "Spam, GAS & Flip" Sure sounds like band member names to a 60's R&B group. If you want to socialize go to Facebook.

It is the only place on the internet I do not use my real name ...
;) Many go there to socialize with the devil ....and the sign might be right.
Funny thing is many of my "friends" there are close friends with my ex's.... so I turn that into entertainment.

Am I the only one that sees it differently, I mean I don't know the situation, but if the kid DOES do nothing but sit in his room and play guitar..... I mean come on. It's just a hobby and shouldn't consume someone. Get a job and get outside of the house and do something with said person's life.

Where do you draw the line of free will and parental coaching? If he's not out having sex, getting drunk, involved in drugs, and making good grades, then at his age that is all that should matter.

This exact point of view could also apply to computer or console gamers.

If the parents helped purchase any of that gear, which they did, then they have no room to speak about coaching. What reverse psychological advantage does helping someone obtain a goal only to confiscate it from them if they dont follow your ideals? That just means you suck as a parent and need materialized objects to get a point across.

I have been in this predicament and the easiest thing to do is to move out. If the kid is treating it like a hobby and not an obscurity to life's every day requirements then i see no problem with it. If the kid is not working or pulling his weight with bills then there is a problem indeed and the goal mindset needs to be changed, but the controlling attitude is the wrong way to go about it.

Maybe I'm misreading the first part of the post, but it seems a bit strange to me. If I raised a kid and bought the kid, say, a bike, obtaining the bike wouldn't be the sole goal. And there would be rules to go along with the bike just as there would be at least some rules that would go along with music gear, game systems, etc... Setting bounds is a proper part of parenting IMO.

Regarding the video, I'd agree the lady goes way overboard. But I also say none of us knows both sides of the full story. The lady should be able to get her point across with far less talking, in any case. :D

I fully agree with what you mean - boundaries are a part of parenting and raising kids properly. However if all they do is ride their bike, without anyone else around, and still do well in school, is it right for you to still scorn your child for riding the bike all of the time?

It is also true we do not know the rest of the story - but it does not excuse the attitude she had. I was always told speak when you are angry, and you will make the greatest speech you will ever regret.

The missing link here is family support of what you love. Music, gaming, anything. Things like this build software engineers, musicians, careers, hobbies that are proven to relieve stress and give expression, so on and so forth.
