I definitely work it the way geo suggested and ride the guitar's volume for more/less gain. There are quite a few good blues tones there especially between 4 and about 8. I rarely go past that with a cranked amp.

I do that, but my main sound has my volume all up. We started doing Since I’ve Been Loving You again and that song rides the vol knob the whole way through. What I can’t imagine is being on stage and needing a certain point on my volume knob to sound my best.

My guess is Jeff Beck almost never put the volume on his guitar all the way up.
