Like I said Blizzard of OZ and Diary Sound like shit..
Reminds me of the tubestack knob on the gorilla amps..

And like I have argued from one end of the internet to the other :D , Randy did not have bad tone for that era as proven by the live clips. His tone was poorly represented on those records by the studios house engineer who was still learning his craft at that point but was all Ozzy could afford. I don't think we can blame that on Randy having bad tone.

And I think Diary sounded pretty cool.

OldSkoolNJ,
Did you hear the Ozzy Tribute album? Randy sounded huge. So it wasn't Randy per se that sounded crappy in the studio recordings.

Tribute was one of my favorite albums.. so is Randy as a guitar player
I do not care about the studio budget, time or Era it was recorded during or who was the producer, the guitar tone on the studio albums sounds like shit to me...
But it doesnt mean that I do not listen to them..
And judging by the other comments I am not the only one that has that opinion..

Me neither. I don't like the studio stuff, but what I was getting at was Randy's live tone was great! So it wasn't him necessarily, it was other factors.

And on the original bootleg of the recording that became "Tribute", Randy's tone was even better. More natural. Of course this is because Max Norman decided to apply the AMS effect to the live tracks when they were turning it into "Tribute" to "make it sound more like the studio albums". The AMS is what I blame on making the recorded guitar tracks have that hollow grind to them. And that's exactly how Norman described what they do to the guitar sound, give it a hollow, grindy edge to them.

I've always thought Jimmy Page's tone was too thin and had no balls. Satriani's tone has always bothered me. I love both players though.

ditto JP's tone 's on song remains the same was awful IMO

makes me wonder if his tubes were bad

love his tone on in thru the out door

flash forward to his newer 2000 stuff w/ plant - his tone sucked even more than on song remains the same

my valvetronix can do better plexi tones

Jimi Hendrix comes to mind.
youve got to be kidding ?

Never really liked his tone but he was one of the reason I picked up a guitar along with Clapton.

Michael Romeo from Symphony X. Terrible Line 6 tone.

Dimebag. Aweful solid state crap.

Greg Howe on his first few CD's. His tone got better with time.

Might as well bring Robert Johnson into the ranks of bad tone if you're grading primative recording technology against today's standards.

Petrucci's live tone really sucks for me,also +1 for Al .... :(

Gus G had an awesome tone on The Premonition.

And Michael Romeo had a good tone on Paradise Lost.

Randy Rhoads

Incorrect. Max Norman was a crappy recording engineer in 1981. If you think this was bad tone for 1981, you don't remember 1981. What do you think Ted Templeman could have done with this more accurate representation of Randy's real tone? It would have been SICK! Because live, it was huge.

YEAH
Max Norman also did some crap work for Mustaine's weak tone. People beat the shit out of Bob Rock but face it,Hetfield's tone on the black album was SICK,something Flemming Rasmussen could never do.
As far as bad tone? Yngwie's tone is bad,it always sounds old and crusty.
Dimebag was hit and miss from album to album.
Meshuggah has terrible tone, but they stomp balls everywhere else.
Paul Gilbert has bad tone, but his playing makes up for it,plenty of pick attack.
I really don't like Slayers tone either.

Why would anyone slam Bob Rock? That dude's a producing/engineering genius.

I thought Petrucci's live tone on a Change Of Season was terrible. Thinner than a Ritz Cracker. But his tone after that has been consistantly good. I think that's also the time he switched from a Triaxis to the IV's and IIC+ amps. I saw him on G3 and he had the best tone of the night by far i thought, even though Gilbert played the best for me.
