Here You Go EVH at his best . . .

Not a big fan of MJ but he had a couple good guitar driven tunes. More so than M&Ms.

One of my fave EVH solo's, it's well known he did 2 takes and probably used a rental Marshall and an Echoplex EP-3, there is also a rumour that says Ed used a “hot-rodded Hartley Thompson amp borrowed from Allan Holdsworth” [for Beat It]. This is backed up by Pete Hartley’s son
Also at one point Steve Lukather said a little about the recording of Beat It, which has now made its way all over the Web: “Quincy Jones and Michael took a skeleton version of ‘Beat It’ up to Eddie Van Halen’s place as they wanted him to solo over the verse section. However, he played over a section that had more chord changes. So to fit his solo to where it went in the song, they had to cut the tape which took a lot of time to synchronize together. After they had managed this, Jeff Porcaro and me were called in to bind Eddie’s solo and some haphazard percussion which was a major headache….” -

There is plenty of guitar all over Jackson's records. Recorded by some of the best in the biz. Maybe there were not enough "in your face" guitar solos for some but they provided in the pocket playing best for the song.

Here's a sample of some of the players. And chances are, some of these guys ghosted on tracks by bands you DO like....

Thriller:
Eddie Van Halen
Paul Jackson, Jr.
Steve Lukather
Dean Parks
David Williams

Off The Wall:
Larry Carlton
Marlo Henderson
Phil Upchurch
Wah Wah Watson
David Williams

Bad:
David Williams
Bill Bottrell
Eric Gale
Danny Hull
Steve Stevens
Dann Huff
Michael Landau
Paul Jackson, Jr.

Michael Jackson music = no guitar. Therefore, IMO, it SUCKS.
You couldn't pay me to listen to that shit. He was part of the MTV era. I get it. Yeah, the guy can sing, and maybe he can arrange music and whatnot. I don't know what involvement he had in that regard, I just can't fucking stand the guy and I'm glad he's not pumping out any more fucking POP FUCKING BULLSHIT MUSIC.

I don't like POP, you dig? Now, this is the internet folks. I'm just voicing my opinion. You can listen to whatever you want. I'm a guitar player. I don't really like much music without guitar in it. I do not like electronic pop bullshit music. But I do listen to Chopin and I also listen to Eminem sometimes. A far superior talent to that pedophile Michael Jackson.

And, yeah, I use to watch the Thriller video in the 80's. I was a kid. Everybody did. But there's a whole lot of good new music out there folks and Michael Jackson ain't it.

You think Skolnick would say something like "Michael Jackson sucks"? I'm betting on no.

No of course he wouldn't.
But I will. Michael Jackson sucks.

Don't forget Slash played on a couple of MJ's tracks also. Say what you want about it but he used more great guitarists than any other mega pop star. Imagine if Taylor Swift used the equivalent of today's guitar heroes.

The solo always struck me as feeble too and slightly out of tune. Quincy Jones is the stand out here.

Hmmmm.... so where can I get your albums?

Ed was a much better player when he kept his right hand off the neck. I prefer this Nicolette Larson track where Ed was thrown into the studio with other musicians and just played live. Plus he didn't roll out that toy piano sounding tapping schtick. Nicolette, not being a child molesting creep, helps too.

I agree in principle with what you're saying... Ed has tapped for as long as any of us has known who he was and it was a fine addition to his playing. I just liked his playing better when he used it sparingly and did much, much more of that blazing, long stretch legato stuff in his solos... Now the constant tapping is way overdone to me...

I actually prefer the rhythm playing, solo and tone on the Nicolette Larson track to what he did on "Beat It" as well....

+1

the timing more than the tune for me, seems ....off...but it's only "eddie off".

which i think eddie is also a master at, playing out the the pocket timewise and blending right back in. not many guys have that fluidity down pat. it's one of the things i'll ALWAYS love about him, his timing and feel....maybe it comes from allegedly being G.U.I. most times?

dont care. I love most of what he's done, and dont hate the rest. he revolutionized the guitar. period.

Ed and Michael both did each other a huge favor on Beat it.
Ed was entering his branching out musically phase on guitar and keyboard and Jackson embraced and sold a Rocker persona which Beat it and VH help with the pop-rock crossover.

Imo Everything from 1984 down to I is Ed at his best.
Mind numbing I know.
