Hi gainers that fly under the radar?

The poor man's Recto, the B-52.

There's local band who's guitarist play one through a Krank cab and it actually sounds pretty damn good.

+1 on engl blackmore , killer amp

laney maybe? they don't get much attention

Do agree...The only ENGL I have ever gotten along with.

You didn't like the Steve Morse?

Actually no...I didn't. I also found nothing particularly appealing about the SE either. But neither of them were as bad as the Powerball that I owned briefly. I could not get rid of that head fast enough. There are a lot of great players who really dig the ENGL voice and feel...I'm just not one of them. Tone is subjective.

Baron
BFG
Peters

All great stuff.

The Laney GH50L has always eluded major attention, but still gets some recognition. I have one, and its like a JCM800, with 5150 levels of gain. I prefer two EL34s in it, but it also takes 6L6s. I'm looking to get either 6550s in it or KT88s after a mod from my tech.
Anyways, about 1K new, and $400-$600 used. Single channel w/ high gain boost. Made in the UK. Damn sweet.

Landry?

As far as ENGL, Bad Cat, Splawn, and Framus... they are all talked about (or have been in the past) a great deal. I wouldn't consider any of them to be esoteric in the least. But I think Peters, Brunetti, and Landry come up fairly irregularly.

Anything Hughes & Kettner gets no love. All of my Hughes & Kettner amps sound great, so don't know if you had a dud or what. My Switchblade 100C is the perfect grab 'n go (locally) amp. Amp, one guitar cord, one MIDI Cable, one power cable, and a guitar. Done and slaying...

I keep trying to spread the gospel, too, but there just isn't any love for H&K. It's a shame - they are reasonably-priced (dirt cheap used) and have a lot going for them. I love the Switchblade as a pick for a cover band. With 4 channels that can be set from clean to ridiculous gain, plus the on-board digital effects, I can get close enough to the "right" tone for the songs that we cover to satisfy myself - and the drunk bar patrons

Landry. I got mine for 2k and 6550 loaded. This amp DESTROYED my SLO and Bogner Ecstasy 101b for what MY ears want to hear from a multi-channel amp.

I love my Laney AOR.
Can get a bit fizzy, but if it's boosted and EQ'd proper, it can be un-fizzed.
I'm sure experimenting around with different tubes would also yield some good results, I just haven't really needed to as of yet.

It gets mention but a lot of it is negative. I think the Uberschall is one of the best high gainers in existence. Not for everybody, but it's certainly not a "one trick pony" and I think both the clean and gain channels are great.

Hell and

Yes.

Not a one trick pony by a long shot. I was very taken aback when I first got my Rev Blue. Here I'd been apprehensive about buying one as much as I love the xtc and shiva models. The Rev blue had a beautiful clean channel and a versatile gain channel. So much so that I sold my Xtc and 20th shiva.

I've always enjoyed the H&Ks I've demo'd in store. Just not quit enough to buy. I thought the core, switch and MKii were all great amps.

The Fender Prosonic - bastard love child of Fender and Zinky that sounds sorta like a cross between a Mark and Recto :inlove:

I agree with the Landry. I had the chance to play one today. Bill was driving back from NY and he was kind enough to stop by my place to try it out. Now that's delivery!! Anyway, that amp has a percussive yet sizzling saturation to its voicing. It is a very inspiring amp to play. I feel it is a cross between my Splawn and Rhodes amps. It has that Marshall flavor but the notes articulate well and the string separation is fantastic like my Rhodes.

Rhodes is one you don't hear about much outside of the forum. They are getting traction. I think once they do, it will be huge....

Yep Rhodes is on his way to becoming a major player. Kyle will be standing on the top of high gainers real soon. Excellent workmanship, good business model, and integrity.

Loved my Avenger. Wish the thought of needing effects never popped into my head. Sold mine 3.5 years ago. Haven't used ANY effects in that time!

Although I have really backed off using "effects"...I think it's ridiculous to both SAY you don't use "effects" and also really NOT use them, which would involve catgut across a bucket on a mop stick.

As soon as you plug into electric..., it's internals and EQ's and even more especially...a gain stage...you are using "effects". But I think you probably mean "time effects" right? Delays reverbs chorus phasers....maybe even a WAH! )gasp it's an eq effect! Plus...most studio engineers and producers apply effects to a greater or lesser degree in the studio. So "effects" are all around us...even in seemingly bear and basic situations.

Even after all that...I think it's dumb to abandon all "effects". They can place the listener in a very specific sensory landscape...a soundscape, really. With ADEPTNESS, it can fool the listener into thinking it's somewhere it's not. My job as an artist and musician is to provide the listener with an EXPERIENCE. Sometimes that is throwing mud in it's face. Other times it's making it swim in a sea of sound. You don't have to go crazy or mad with it, i.e. sometimes applying a little bit of chorus can make a HUGE stereophonic sound. Providing the listener an experience in a soundscape.

Of course...you can play to melt their face off and shake the hair off their balls. I'd be hesitant to count either method or any method out let alone be proud of it. Some of the most successful traditional artists (painting, drawing, photography, sculpture, etc) used multiple techniques

It is of course just my opinion! I enjoy having a full tool kit even if I don't always use every tool every time. I don't look at it like a "need". They are spices in the rack, not the meat and potatoes. Yes?

Why do you refer to your listeners as "it" instead of "he" (or "her")? Seems rude. No?
;)
