Hi gainers that fly under the radar?

Why do you refer to your listeners as "it" instead of "he" (or "her")? Seems rude. No?
;)[/quote]

After that big long spiel THAT was what stood out? LOL.

I was wondering if anyone would notice. "It" seemed more expeditious than say "he/she" or "the listener". Plus "the listening experience" is "it" as well. Was hoping we'd concentrate on how when where and why to use effects.... :aww: :)

that would be another thread though, right?

SteveK, I think you're splitting hairs on the whole "no effects" thing. It's obvious the guy meant that he's been plugging straight into the amp with no pedals or anything in the chain. Stop trying to be so verbose.

I believe what Jer was speaking of is Time based effects like Delay, Chrous, Flanger.

Hughes & Kettner Triamp MK II
Brunetti 059
Egnater Vengeance/Armageddon
Line 6 Spider Valve

Seriously, all of the above sound great (even the... gasp... Line 6 when set up properly--channel volume low/master volume high).

I said as much in my post. I just wanted to relate that things we hear ALL the time may SEEM like they have no "effects" applied. But of course they do. I also understand why players choose to not use "effects". There's something about plugging straight into a really good amp and letting things fly...it can be liberating. And of course your genre may determine that as well.

There was no ill-will or judgement intended. Just discussion, which is what this whole thing is for. Right?

My apologies if it came off heavy handed. I do believe firmly that we should use all the tools available. Black and white photography is wonderful....so is color! Like a mechanic....you don't always use every tool in the kit, but it's there to help you build and make the job easier. A touch of reverb, the sweet sparkle of light chorus....these things ENHANCE the music, not bury it! Which is the reason I replied to Jer....don't think of it as a burden.

Let's get back to hi-gainers...shall we?

A GREAT point about channel volume low! It can be a habit to raise up channel/patch volumes to match other patches...but I have learned to keep those on the lower side. There's information that something like the POD HD's can be overdriven in the signal chain when amp volumes are too high. Keeping the amp model volume low makes for a more natural, less clippy sound.

Works on the Fender Mustang III as well.

Peavey VTM's are killer and can be had for next to nothing.

Rivera's aren't under the radar, most people don't care for their gain structure.

A couple of weeks ago I spent some time comparing Plexitone, Pinnacle and plain vanilla Rivera on channel two because I realised how close they are voiced.

My conclusion tends more towards the standalone vs mix thing.

I agree with the Landry. I had the chance to play one today. Bill was driving back from NY and he was kind enough to stop by my place to try it out. Now that's delivery!! Anyway, that amp has a percussive yet sizzling saturation to its voicing. It is a very inspiring amp to play. I feel it is a cross between my Splawn and Rhodes amps. It has that Marshall flavor but the notes articulate well and the string separation is fantastic like my Rhodes.

Quinn, check out this guy on a G3

Earforce!!! (Can't speak about the cleans tho)

The cleans on the VHT I can say aren't anything special but damn is it ever so brutal on the gain side.

Also agree with the already mentioned Baron. Its a bad mofo but again idk how the cleans are.

Imo , although its all over the radar. The Rockerverb has some of the best cleans on any high gainer that I have heard

The Cornford Kotzen ?
Im going to try and get one this year - will probably be tricky but there is very very little info/clips on the net of them...
Quite under the radar imho...

:) Check out the cleans on the Fryette Sig-X ..... I often prefer it over my NMV amps for clean textures. All three channels can produce several clean voicings.

I have about 20 amps here & the last several years The Sig-X & Deliverance 120 are the only amps I use much with a Master Volume. Just a matter of needs & taste....

This one was new to me: Mesa Subway Rocket. I thought it was a "jack of all trades, master of none" type of combo. Then I heard it played on Channel 2 in Contour mode......

Not a high gain amp...more like mid gain.

The Mesa Royal Atlantic 100 doesn't get talked about much, but it's a great sounding high gainer IMO. Fantastic cleans, and a gain ch with 2 modes that can go from classic rock all the way into more modern metal tones. A very organic sounding gain, with a great feel and lowend that stays tight and articulate. Ch selectable spring reverb, built in attenuation per channel that works surprisingly well, good loop, etc. The only knock I've found so far, is the lack of a presence control. Volume or boosting takes care of it for me, but I would find it useful at low volumes.

Baron Amps seem to fly under the radar, at least for me. I'd never heard of them until like a month ago and I really don't know how.
Titan amps are cool too. Zach is a good guy to deal with and his prices are great considering what you get.
