I can play clean just fine - have done cure and smiths tribute bands where I had to be johnny marr, and it was a lot of fun
That being said, every "clean" player i've ever heard uses so much god damn reverb, compression, and delay, that they might as well be playing with metal levels of gain
I think you might be confusing "can play" with "would want to play"

@70 Mach 1 throws down the gauntlet with the clean tone challenge.
I would plug straight into that rig but I don't want to play anyone's guitar but mine. I don't mind clean tone at all, if I can get it to some light breakup that'd be nice but if I can get some good sustain then you will have to put your amp on permanent loan to me.

I don't know if you've heard many clean guitarists lately - mostly P&W, country, Jazz/Bebop guys - but they generally play with a ton of effects, and it's used to cover up gaps in technique and make it easier to play (especially the compression)
Mick from TPS, Phil McKnight, and a million other clean tone afficianados all admit it tho.....
The reverb is there because you feel naked without it

But im an oxymoron. I use 2 super Ds in this one.
They handle clean very well especially the neck. Noooo mudd.

I just started really playing humbuckers more often. I really like the push of a humbucker into a cleaner amp. I went from high gain/teles and strats, now I feel like I am gravitating more toward humbuckers and fatter cleans

To play 100% clean with no FX or Reverb, you have to have KILLER technique to pull it off with no clams whatsoever.
It takes A LOT of dedication to play that way.
Unfortunately that’s not in my wheelhouse.
Distortion/OD and singing sustain are my friends.

I'm more concerned with the sustain levels than gain levels but compressor pedals don't really work good for blues so it has to be gain to get the sustain. I haven't seen another realistic way around it.

Like, it's quite literally made so that you can get the widest variety of tones possible plugging straight in

I basically did that with a twin live for a couple years. A lot of nights I didn't get to crank it to my satisfaction and had to work my technique to pull it off. It does the chops good to play straight in but it's nice to get that extra bit of sustain from a big clean amp like that when there are restrictions on dB. Even now with no dB restriction gigs I like that extra juice, adjusted to taste with my guitars volume control.

I have been using this as my home rig, it's a Blues Jr with a Jensen speaker. It's pretty interesting with a humbucker, how many tones you can get. I usually just played my Tele with it, but it's a fat little growler when pushed.
