Long story short. I bought this same model amp in 1978. Never appreciated the growl. Actually hated it.

I was a Page nut back then

Sold it in 94 for an 800. Kept that around for a while and went full circle as i turned gray

About 5 yrs ago i Found this clean one on the verb for $700 and jumped on it
All original tubes and everything

Heck yeah this ^ all the way. Les Paul or a 335...either a super or a twin. The super is a lot quicker breakup with the tube rec and makes a pretty great main amp for all but the lowest volume events. I gotta rip my twin at about twice the volume to get the same amount of give to the notes. @japetus needs a super and the nice Waynzo drive he already has and to stop over so I can borrow his amp for a few months.

I basically did that with a twin live for a couple years. A lot of nights I didn't get to crank it to my satisfaction and had to work my technique to pull it off. It does the chops good to play straight in but it's nice to get that extra bit of sustain from a big clean amp like that when there are restrictions on dB. Even now with no dB restriction gigs I like that extra juice, adjusted to taste with my guitars volume control.
