how to choose cab size

The Studio is 20W it's not going to push a 4x12 of 25W 12" Greenbacks into the sweetspot of natural distortion. A 1x12 may sound boxy (i.e., small),

If you have a local shop that sells cabs (and the SC20H) see if you can schedule time to try different cabs?
i dont have a shop i can do this in

was just gonna go for marshall 1960b. thoughts

Cant go wrong with a marshall, in general, however the issue is what speakers are in it and what tone youre after

If you like modern metal, get the one with vintage 30s

If you like 90s metal or grunge, get the one with the T75s

If you like classic rock, 70s and 80s metal, get one with greenbacks/creambacks/similar

There's a million great cabs out there, its more about matching it up to the tone youre going for

im planning on buying a jmc800 studio version. just unsure of cab size
If you are planning on going with a low watt amp, I think it doesn't matter what size cab you get.

When you want to push some air, go 50 watt or above. The lunchbox amps are for kids that live with their parents, hipsters and the old and decrepit. If you want to feel the amp, you want to push air.

That has Vintage 30s, a more modern sounding speaker, rated at 60W each vs greenbacks; the original JCM 800 speakers were g12-65 IIRC?

Yep - both are going to sound good, it's more a question of what is closer to ideal for what you plan to use it for

For the same price as the studio, you could purchase a PRS MT 100 used that would blow away the studio.
If you want to enter into the higher range of amps, there are a lot of killer amps out there in the member classifieds that will get you some really good sounds

This is for sale on Reverb (not mine, local pickup only in PA tho') 1987 JCM-800 4104 50W, speakers are G12M-70:

But, that's not a Marshall, begone with your booteek heresy nonsense :D

i was just gonna buy this https://www.andertons.co.uk/marshall-1960b-300w-4x12-straight-cabinet-w-celestion-g12t-75-speakers/

celestion speakers. i want to get nice alt rock sounds like on siamese dream as well as metal sounds like master of puppets. but i want to be able to play cleaner emo type riffs too

it seems like it would fit what the OP is looking for best, unless he goes all out on an unmolested 100W vintage JCM 800 head and period cab which is going to cost much more
i heard u only need 100w if u plan on playing arenas. and those 50w ones seem hard to come by

The bigger the cab, the bigger the tone. More low end and more lower mids in a 4x12. I think a 2x12 is a good compromise though, as there are certainly big sounding 2x12's and they are easier to move around.

the SC20 isn't going to push those speakers enough IMO. Are you in the UK? If so, I'm surprised there aren't more vintage JCM 800 amps and cabs around?!
