how to choose cab size

I often like the sounds I get out of recording my 2x12 vs 4x12. Tighter, bit more direct or dry sounding.

There's a great video that shows the difference of mic'd 1x12 vs 2x12 vs 4x12, using the same speaker. Lemme see if I can find it...

Here it is. Good stuff starts around 3:20:

Edited to say, definitely consider the Friedman vertical 2x12, if you decide to go with a 2x12. It sounds unbelievably huge for a 2x12. I have had way too many 2x12s, settling on a Bogner OS 2x12 as my fav. After directly comparing it to my friend's horizontal and vertical Friedman 2x12s, I'd go vert for an amp in a smaller head shell, horizontal for a full size amp. They both impress with low end, openness and punch.

If you get a cab, get a 4x12. It also makes a sick nightstand.

If you’re recording in a bedroom though, load box and IRs is probably the best route.

The studio series amps have EL34 power tubes, like my DSL40CR and Origin50C; which I think both sound good, the Origin 50 can get the power tubes hot enough vs the Origin 20...not sure about a 20W EL34 tho'...I mean how hot / how much power are a pair of EL34 tubes pushing at 20W?

Yeah, speaker IRs are legit. I literally had the same sound micing and using IR. IR became more convenient with kids bumping into the mic all the time

While were discussing this, will having a 4x12 remove the need to use resonance or thump controls because of the added speakers? I only use my thump on 2-3 most of the time currently with my 2x12, but just wondered if one can just get away with using bass instead.

Not for me, depends on the amp and the cab, and the guitar. For instance, I don't need as much thump using a cab with K100s or EVMs and I do with Greenbacks. Some of my guitars are thinner sounding than others, too. And thump on my BE100 doesn't work like the punch on a Helios or deep on a Diezel.

I just swapped out my Greenbacks but I honestly do miss them for just strumming high gain bar chords. There's something magical about them when playing like that. I noticed that with the thump on my BE50, I don't hear it as much when I'm sitting directly in front of the cab, but I hear a ton of it when I'm sitting to the side. Thanks for your reply, that's very helpful.
