Go have your drummist listen to Fool In the Rain by Zep. Definite tempo change in that tune. Can't argue with Bonzo. There might be a Rush tune or two that display tempo changes as well

Ok so I recorded both versions. There's more tempo changes than I thought and there's still 1 part I may slow down a few bpm.
Just plugged in direct very quickly. Beware, horrible tone and a few screw ups. Didn't have time to perfect and it's not meant to sound good, just to show the differences.
The song ranges from 90bpm to 125bpm. The drummer said he wanted to do the whole thing at 120 but I did his version at 110 because that's already insanely fast for a couple parts.

After hearing these I think I should be able to just let him listen and not have to say anything to him lol.
Could someone that knows time signatures well tell me if there's another way to make it fit a straight tempo? Everything sounds like 4/4 but idk time signatures

I prefer v1-1.
Tempo changes exist in lots of music, including heavy metal. I guess your drummer wants to keep things simple. Still, it's a bit surprising he wouldn't be ready to accept the idea of a tempo change if he's in a band like yours (and capable as a drummer who plays such music). If I were in your shoes I'd probably be a bit annoyed too.
If you want to edit the song to make it fit one tempo, and that tempo is a bit too fast for parts you've written in the slower tempo, you have to rewrite the faster riffs so they don't tax your arms as much (or sound sloppy, or too busy). That might mean dropping some triplet chugging in favor of something simpler (8th notes maybe...and perhaps compensate for the change in aggression by doing all downstrokes/muting?) Or changing some 8th note chug parts to quarter note chugs. Or just rethinking the parts for the different tempo. After all it's about what really "fits" for the intent you were after. It might not be as simple as "dropping a few chugged notes".

Since I got Ez Drummer I put all the drums together and show him what to play. I used to defer to him but since I have the program I work out the parts myself.
He's even said, damn, you don't need me anymore. I don't respond.

haha Actually before I did this with Addictive Drums too, but now I took it a step further and cut ties with ours. Just the other guitarist and me writing everything and producing a new prog/thrash album.

Yeah, I would have to rewrite the song lol. Or at least get rid of the thrashy riff.
It's hard for me to rewrite something unless a random riff happens to fit. Usually doesn't work out well for me

I can't do that. I don't want to. Not to mention I don't have the production skills or quality gear to be a self produced/self promoted musician or you tube guy.
I love to play but what I love more is performing shows in front of an audience. With the lack of my kind of musicians in my area I've learned that I need to compromise and that band members need each other. I can't be a one man band.
Anyhow the good news is I think after hearing the recordings the drummer realizes what I was trying to tell him and he said he's ok with tempo changes as long as they're mapped out in the DAW to practice with.
