HNAD man. I've got a 5150 II and I'll tell you this.

The crunch channel is fantastic, for mid gain it kicks ass as well, actually sounds really decent for blues. It's got a ton of mids and not as much bass as you'd espect, and can get fizzy with high presence, so keep these things in mind when EQing.

These amps like EMGS, JJ valves (It's quite a bright amp, JJs are darker in tonality) These Peaveys from what I've heard and what amps I've seen at gigs/played, 5150/6505 does balls out br00tz riffage the BEST.

NO amp likes EMG's!! :gethim:

At least not when my ears are listening, Im an EMG hater.. ;)

It flat out depends on what you like. Im using a 59' in one guitar & a Breed in another, & theyre 2 different flavors that come thru this amp very nice IMO.

I don't like EMGs either. But the 5150/6505 series likes them for being relatively low noise and high output pickups. :poke: I'm replacing my EMGs with Bareknuckles when I have the money to. then putting the EMGs in my Jackson which currently has Duncan Designed pickups.

i want another fja 5150 :(

i secretly loved that amp, bad mistake letting it go

I'm using a Gibson Fying V with stock 496R/500T, though I contemplating a change to '57 Classic/Classic Plus combo. FWIW, I'm playing it through a Genz Genz G-Flex 2x12. Should ROCK!

I have no experience with those pickups or any stock gibson pickups, only my Epiphone's hehe. :) Sorry buddy. Whatever pickups you use it will rock, 5150s do tend to dominate alot of the sound compared to some amps.

I thought the 6505+ was more alive, and clearer. Almost more "Marshall" than the 5150, but tons more balls. BRUTAL, indeed.
Congrats!
I'm on my third one, that's exactly what I think of it like a more "marshall" version of the original.
to the OP you won't need the BBE in the loop of the + , to me those sound better with the original 5150's.
I actually run an MXR 10 band EQ in the loop of mine and it gets real "Marshally" sounding if I want.
Really smooths out the lead channel too (if you want that) which I do. :)
I'm holding on to the one I currently have.
I am about to try an MXR in the loop of mine. What settings do you use on the eq? I noticed pulling some of the 250 hz out helps on my FJA.

I like to drop the 800hz right out of there :D

Just be sure you do the Bias mod.. I did that to mine and the distortion just got way less fizzy after I re-biased it and got it out of crossover distortion.. It helped the clean channel a bunch too!!!

To get rid of the fizz did you change any or the pre tubes too or just rebias?

I have JJ, Tungsols, Mullard RI's, and EH's. I WILL find the amps potential, within an hour, tomorrow after work. Probably won't sleep tonight. I'm more hopped up than gearing up for an all-day fishing trip...

And yeas, it's got an adjustable bias. The probe, and DMM is packed up, as is my Gibson V, re-strung, tightly intonated, and action tweaked. Plays like A DREAM. aLSO, TOOLS OF THE TRADE - GE-7, BBE Sonic Stomp, Boss RV-5, and TS9. We'll see what shines.. Tomorrow is gonna be like Christmas. My brother has a studio, and we can get loud, 24-7. Hell if my amp wasn't getting shipped to work, I'd call in with a stomach ache.
Sorry, smoked some hydro - can't type, all the sudden..  hehehehehe

the stock adjustable bias is for shit - you will still need to mod it to get enough swing from the potentiometer to get the amplifier out of crossover distortion.

good luck on the 5150 II, love mine

Yeah, I know it's bias is still whacked, but I'm confident I will get my shorts damp, with euphoric, brutality. I'm sure it's stock-piled with EH preamp tubes. Combo of JJ and Tungsol will put a HUGE dent in the fizz.

Congrats man. I miss my 5150II I hope to own another one day

Hmm.. I dont know if mine was bias modded B4 I bought it, but it sounds perfect. Not sizzly like a friends 5150 combo. I dont recommend the stock speakers though.
