I gotta say, the new Van Halen-

I bought the disc and I am loving most of it. I think the DLR criticism's are funny. He is my favorite part. I was listening to the album with good headphones on and a lot of the songs remind me of old VH so much that I was picturing a young DLR singing them as he stalked the stage. I have to say that You and Your Blues is probably my least favorite and reminds me of a Balance era track with Dave on it. In fact, I like Tattoo a lot better than that. Most of the other tracks just smoke though. Yeah, I am not found of EVH's tone, and he is playing old, rehashed licks on old tunes, but I have to admit, these tunes are really good. I am hearing it like a really good Dave solo album...although we all know if he put out this exact disc, no one would give a shit...and that is just the sad reality of the music industry.

I had no idea Edward was so good with a wah pedal too! I swear I though his best playing days were over - but this release has laid to rest that assumption. I don't know if Ed or Wolf is actually playing the bass on these recordings? I will say that at least now I can actually hear the bass. He's a young guy, and has improved since he first joined VH. At least by the "secret concert" clips I've heard...

I sure hope Dave & Ed can keep this thing together. By evidence of what I've heard so far - VAN HALEN IS BACK! :rawk:

thumbs down, although I like Outta Space and Stay Frosty..I guess the music there is enough to carry those tunes. Too much wah from Eddie, and the sound production reminds me of the peaking on Death Magnetic. I expect the the fans on tour to get really quiet when they play a few of these tunes.

My opinion, get back with Sammy and create some real songs that are original and not leftovers. Also, as hard as Wolfie tries, he is not Billy Sheehan, so he needs to find the groove and pocket and reinforce the songs. He sounds like he is playing guitar on bass.

Heard a tune on the radio today and was very disappointed with Ed's tone... What happened? Sounds like there are a whole bunch metal zones in series?

Tune was OK, nothing spectacular that caught my ear...

I will quote myself from a previous post:

David Lee Roth. The greatest frontman ever to grace the stage, a natural-born poet and entertainer extraordinaire. He's the Elvis Presley, Lenny Bruce, and Mark Twain of my generation. He's the "Capt. Kirk" of rock & roll - there is no equal. I haven't purchased a new CD in the last 5 years, but I will definitely be getting this. Dave - it's good to have you back!

Ed's playing on the new album is ON FUCKING FIRE!!! The "chemistry" between DLR and EVH is undeniable! ADKOT is the best VH album since Fair Warning.
If you think its better than FUCK, you've got a screw loose buddy.
I don't know what's more gay - your avatar, or your Charvel "rainbow" collection? :emofag: :grim:

First time in 20 plus years I've actually purchased a CD on its release date...by the time I've hit these songs the third time through, I'm really loving this record...hearing a lot of things I haven't heard in a looong time. Has an old school VH groove to it that you can't fake. I'm not getting all caught up in production values and Ed's tone...the music fuckin' rocks and Ed is bringing his "A" game. That's all I need...

bought the cd today and already like it more than any van hagar release, although eddie was more on it back when 5150 was released so that album was cool too.

hagar tried to make things too melodic and poppy and could never be as witty as dlr.

roth whips the boys up into a frenzy, then slaps on the pilot goggles and punches the tank through the guard rail and off the cliff and right before the mushroom cloud he looks back and salutes with an ear to ear smile.

i really think it was his ADD that allowed him to:
a) be master of ceremonies for such a huge sounding rock machine
b) apply vocals so aggressively over such quirky, angular rhythms and actually enhance the intensity of an already firebreathing song.

listen to light up the sky or loss of control CRANKED.
hagar couldn't touch that rock genius.

After two complete listens I've gotta agree with the thumbs up - this is what should have come after 1984 and is almost as strong as Fair Warning. I was very skeptical and what I'm hearing is as good as anything else in the Roth era catalog. My only criticism has been mentioned many times; I wish Mikey was involved. It's a shame, but appears those difference won't be reconciled anytime soon so it is what it is.

I'm positive that none of this would have happened if Ed didnt bring in Wolfgang. Mike is and will be big part of the history but Im not at all missing him

Fixed.

+1

Wolf was surely a major catalyst, if not the primary reason we got this album.

Wow! Listening to it now, was really digging the album, and then As Is and now honeybabysweetiedoll came on. Awesome music! Sounds like something I'd expect from Steve Vai not Van halen!
A minority of people will get into honeybabysweetiedoll. I am firmly in the minority. Eddie's dark side is sinisterly dark. I love it.

...But I can't help feeling that the production really lets the album down...
Don't blame the producer. Look at what he had to work with: a bi-polar singer, a recovering addict with an ego, a non-communicating drummer, and a kid who only listens to the previously mentioned addict. I think Shanks pulled off a fricking miracle with these clowns.
WOW!!!!!

Comments like that, remind me why i don't come here very much... :aww:

Well,....his comments seemed pretty accurate to me. :dunno:

This forum is about "music gear discussions and more.." With that in mind one would think that the concept of tone and sound should be valid discussion points. But, quite a few here seems to imply that any critisism of the VH album is only expression of negativity, hate etc. I am an old VH fan. Personally I've stated that the album has some really good songs, but I have issues with the guitar tone and sound of the album. Isn't it possible to hold both views?

Definitely. I feel the same way. As a matter of fact, with the exception of a few parts, and I mean a few, I am not even inspired very much by EVH's playing at all on this disc. I like the songs, but just like they are from old tracks, his licks are very old as well (with the exception of a few of them.) I mean I am not listening to it at the moment, but he directly quotes Hot for Teacher, and something off of 5150, just out of memory. Of course, there was the Eruption quote as well. Then there are the phrases he has be recycling forever, but who cares? They rule. Don't get me wrong, there are a couple of tracks that I dig EVH on, but we all know you run out to buy a VH disc for EVH. For a Dave era VH disc, this was the first one which I wasn't inspired by EVH. The overall songs are great, and I really dig Dave's performance on the album. That's why earlier I said it seems more like a Dave solo album, almost like the band could be any quality backing band. I mean, EVH doesn't have his tone, and there are tons dudes that can play like EVH. Hell he is even rocking a Whammy pedal.

As for anyone that has a problem with your criticism...what do you care? I bought this disc as soon as it came out. I buy tons of music. Buy is the key word. I go to shows. I support these artists. A lot of people on forums don't. They steal the shit and then talk. As if your opinion doesn't matter because you aren't a sheep, but theirs is more relevant. Guess what? The artist doesn't give a shit what they think. I don't give a rats ass what they say either. How many times have people said, "this is the first time I bought a cd in x years." Really? Sucks for you.

There is great music out there and it is cheap. A full music download is a whopping $9 or so these days. Sometimes as much a $6. I believe that is what the new Warren Haynes was. I mean, I know when I share my opinion, I am labeled a hater. I have been a VH fan for about 30 yrs. and have been fascinated by them. I am a Dave era fanatic, but also like Sammy. That said, I am not a sheep and won't just accept something because EVH put it out. I hate Balance, III and a lot of shit he did. I will say it if I believe it. So next time they say something, remember to ignore them.

I got the CD...like it a lot. The songs are cool and the playing is great. I agree, the mix is not the greatest. I really don't like the kick and snare...but I never did like Alex's tones anyway. The guitar tone is..ok...it's been better.

Still, I'll be listening to this CD a lot over the next few weeks. Yeah, it is better than most of the crap I hear on the radio...for sure!
