Steve Vai did a new cover of Van Halen's "Jump".

Lol, they both look like psychopaths or brainwashed cult members in that pic.

While that's probably true, I like Vai and Satch. Can't listen on repeat. but once in a while they're a really good listen.

Have you guys heard this one by Vai? My favourite track of his by far.

It's kind of like what Polyphia should have aspired for, I think.

On the new Jump, ugh. That was awful. The main singer is on hard autotune and when the Spanish vocals came on, I lost it. By the time Vai's shredding came in, it was so buried in the mix that there was little point in listening to the whole thing,

i had that cassette and i don’t think i ever listened to it all the way through. i thought it was rancid.

the only solo vai stuff i listened to more than once were blue powder, bad horsie, and boy from seattle.
his Jose marshall/braddhaw rig tone and playing when i saw him at the forum with roth on the eatum and smile tour was impressive. he and sheehan were checking out Racer X gigs and it showed in their harmony shred lines that night. but his tone on the album was thin and the playing was a silly cartoon soundtrack. Skyscraper got even weirder.

then he ruined whitesnake when he brought his shtick to their music. i saw that slip of the tongue show and couldn’t believe how horrible the vintage timeless Whitesnake songs sounded. i never hated whammy bars and wah wahs more than i did that night and i just can’t bring myself to watch him squirm and gyrate seductively in front of most male audiences anymore.

by contrast satriani was always a pretty respectable guitar player and created memorable songs i enjoyed. he had some weird periods but always seemed to return to his rock blues senses.

my friend was standing next to me at the Roxy when he took this photo of Joe on the Surfing tour in 88:
