I think the biggest thing is that when you close mic, and dial in the amps, you are going to have a very similar tone. The in the room sound may sound kind of bad to guys that like close micd...but it does give you a little better idea of the way an amp behaves.
The way that an amp interacts with you as you play it at volume is a very big part of the experience that clips closemicd or in the room just won't show you. And that is part of what makes an amp special for a gear nerd, vs someone that just records or gigz
I completely agree and personally went straight to the In Room section for that reason. And even then, the differences were not much of a deal breaker. I didn't hear Kyle explain how he dialed all the amps in. The Recto's to me sounded best but that's my brain/bias. Marks are amazing amps but recorded tones on Youtube never do much for me. I used to follow Kyle a lot back in the day but lately, it has been very difficult.
I will say this: As much as I got tired of hearing the same riff(s) over and over again - it takes a lot of experience and practice (and probably re-do's) to do that over and over again in a demo like he did.
