If someone shows up to a audition w/Epiphone or Squire...

I wouldn't mind either, BUT you cannot help but doubt a little. After the first few songs then you'll be able to really tell if the dude can play. Of course the babbles after the jams, having a few drinks and talking gear would reveal whu this guy has such cheap gear (money prob., maybe he left his "good shit" at home, etc etc)

now, having said that I kind of find it cool to go to an audition with "somewhat cheap" gear. I find it extremely tacky and pretentious to arrive with my Diezel VH4. The strat is ok, everybody own or can own a strat, but a Diezel Vh4? obviously it's yours and you can do whatever you want, hell if it's the only amp you own you need to use it, but it feels a little bit like going to a shelter place to help people out and arrive in a ferrari.

for an audition a nice Strat and a cool fender combo with 3 pedals (tuner/delay/drive) is the shit!

So, here's another question for you guys......

guy shows up with a really "crappy" rig, can play, but has tone for shit, and thinks it sounds good, but regardless of how nice your rig is and how well you play, it makes everything else sound bad. Do you still play with him?

nah, in that case I wouldn't...

the dude will compromise the tonal quality of the band. And that's as important as having good musicians.

you know, when it comes to band I've noticed that the best bands are the ones where the ppl in it tend to have things in common. If the members are TOO dissimilar things tend to go down. I'm not talking about all the members loving KFC, or all the members being a Yankees fan, etc etc.......more like tone preference (if one guy is after the Meshuggah tone and the other is after the Merciful fate). Or even money....if one guy has 12 of the best amps around and comes to practice riding a nice BMW M3 and the other guys are struggling to pay rent let alone be able to buy stuff....... things will tend to go ape shit after a while.

I know it's hard to get people like you and we eventually have to settle with anyone as long as it's good musician and commited, but that's also why most bands don't work out

Absolutely not. You can buy gear all day long, but you can't buy talent and musicianship. I know tons of people with killer gear who can't play for shit.

+1
+2, I'd give him a shot, his real stuff may be on order

This. I also know a bunch of dudes who can take cheap gear and just destroy anyone around them.

Import Jackson > MXR Dime Distortion > Nady 31 band eq > Digitech GSP21 > American DJ power amp > 2 Rogue 4x12 cabs.

I suppose it makes you wonder but often it's just that people aren't "clued-in" on good gear. In the past I think I would have pre-judged them but then I realised how many guitar players - especially on forums - have amazing gear and absolutely cannot play for shit. So I think I would wait and see.

yeah, most of the time musicians just don't have a clue

I played a Marshall Valvestate VS100 for 10 years and during all those years I thought I had "A MARSHALL!" hehehe

but who knows..... I have a VH4 now and I suck :(

fuck no..absolutely nothing wrong with epiphone or squire

I have an epiphone LP ultra that sounds and plays killer since I upgraded the pickups..honetly it plays better than some true blue gibsons that cost five times as much that I've played...and I played a $179 squire strat that was set up amazingly well and played like butter...

some people put too much emphasis on this sort of thing..skills are skills, tone is tone...

I've seen people playing on $2000+ boutique kinda guitars (PRS, Suhrs, etc etc) that can't play their fuckin' way out of a wet paper bag...and I've seen people play on shitty beaters that absolutely rip....

quite frankly, entertaining the idea of dismissing someone from an audition just because their guitar didn't cost thousands of dollars is about as snobby as it gets...

not accusing the OP of being a snob, but just calling it as I see it...

Call it prejudice, BUT......................

In my experience, the shittiest players play the shittiest gear.

no joke.

Some guy rolls up with a properly configured Midi setup, with a properly set up Edge trem, he probably knows what he's doing on the fretboard.

you can have a properly set up trem on a guitar that costs $200 or a guitar that costs $2000..one has nothing to do with the other

LOL! :D
What a dumb thread. Why don't you let them plug un and show you what they can do first? WOW! NOVEL IDEA!

I guess I have to explain.

Yeah, I know. A KILLER player could walk in a with a $199 pawnshop RG560 and most likely be better than the guy with an Epi SGl. I'm saying, technicians who appreciate good hardware (diamonds in the rough), and keep it maintained, and know how to create magic with sleeper gear will always be cooler than guys who buy new, budget gear like squires and epiphones. I guess that's what I'm saying. I don't know. Nevermind.

BTW, I said "EDGE" trem, so I had a very specific kind of player in mind.

NO

I would rather judge a guy by his gear, and be safe that I probably won't have to have my ears grated with feedback.

yeah, Ibanez shredder types..which negates your opinion in the first place cause we all know that IBBYS SUCK!!!!

I'm kidding of course =)

anyway, a killer player would probably sound just as good on both...

BUT it's your opinion and you're entitled to it....I'm just disheartened to hear people still carry around this sentiment

I've seen lots of classifieds on Harmony Central

'METAL BAND LOOKING FOR GUITAR PLAYER!!! MUST OWN IBANEZ (or jackson or whatever) and MESA AMPS!!!!! OR WILL BE IGNORED!!!!!'

my response to that? they can go fuck themselves..lol...

But, you play a REAL ESP through a Splawn. I can assume you are a great player who likes hair metal.

you don't have to assume..you can check out my clips and decide from there, regardless of gear =)
