If someone shows up to a audition w/Epiphone or Squire...

...do you automatically dismiss them, not take them seriously or view them with a prejudice?


I was having this discussion with a friend and if someone showed up at at audition for your band with a Epiphone or Squire with a OK amp (not a pro level Diezel VH4 fullstack or anything we will say a 2x12 100watt combo for this example add any brand you want) would you dismiss them sooner than someone that showed up with nice gear

The consensus seamed to be if they dont take their gear seriously its hard to take them seriously as a player. Unless of course there playing is just so outstanding that it makes up for the lack of quality gear. This of course is rarely the case but an exception to the rule.

What say you guys?

I am not trying to turn this into a Epiphone or Squire bashing thread but it seams to be a common brand that is often seen at auditions, that is why I used them as an example.

Some people cant afford it and honestly dont have the knowledge and will praise there crate until there probably told otherwise or presented with something better.
Of course its s point aganist them to have horrible gear but i would listen to there playing first thats whats most important after all.

Btw I don't really care, if they show up with shitty gear, BUT if you're somewhat serious about the band, you have to plan to get something better when you can afford it tho.

In the past I've had a few show up with "percieved" shit for gear....And Wailed!!!! It ain't the ingredients...it's the chef knowing what to do with them..

you seem to know me personally, yet I can't place who you are...sorry...please refresh my memory....but you are right...i'm man enough to admit that my gear is 200 x better than me. truth hurts lol

I've got a $99 Squier Strat and a $199 Squier Tele and each of them hang with way more expensive guitars I've played. You just got to get the right ones and then put in good pickups, so I wouldn't dismiss anyone for playing those guitars.

Someone shows up with a Squier Stratocaster, bone stock, I'm going to assume they're not good.

Someone shows up with a Squier Classic Vibe Tele, bone stock, I know that they know a good bargain when they see one.

Someone shows up with some goofy, ornate, crazy color Epiphone LP, I'm going to assume the worst.

Someone shows up with an Epiphone SG with new tuners, and upgraded pickups, then I know that they KNOW what tone they're after, but just happen to be broke.



I'd probably be more prejudicial against someone who rolls in with a $4000 custom shop R9 LP. I'd assume that they collect/look at their gear, more than actually play it.

I've always said I'd love to go to an audition with one of those beginner Strat-Pack things (cheapo starter guitar with little starter amp in the same awkward shaped box)....and literally carry in the box and open it at the audition and then completely smoke everyone there.
