if you still gig with a 412 cab, why?

Unfortunately my 412 (mesa halfback 412 with 2 EVs) has never seen a gig since I have owned it. It is heavy for a 412 and just stays at home. It sounds awesome. If I join another band, it will be the cab I leave at the practice space. I am also considering getting a greenback loaded 412, in 212's I have mainly had to overlook greenbacks due to their low power rating.

One thing to keep in mind when gigging with a 412, is that just cause it doesn't take up much more space than a 212 or have to be louder, there is a certain stigma about using a 412. Some people may give you a hard time when using one, just smile and play. Unfortunately people judge things with their eyes, not their ears. "That rig looks loud"

For a 212 you can use Splawn Small Blocks or Celestion Creambacks.

I just talked to Scott Splawn and he said he could switch my Splawn 212 order for a 412. However, we live on the third floor of a condo complex and I carry all my gear up and down the steps, I am thinking the Splawn 212 with Small Blocks makes the most sense till we get a house, then I want a 412 with WGS Green Berets. Till then, the Bogner OS212, Stone Age 212C and Splawn 212 will do! :-)

I probably should have mentioned that I currently have four 212 cabs, three 112 cabs, and one 412. I am happy with my current 212's and speakers, so that is why I was thinking of adding a 2nd 412. Probably the EVH 412 as it comes stock with greenbacks.

I am aware of the high power greenbacks like the creambacks, and scumback 65W M75's, etc, but would rather stick with the 20-25Watt versions and go with a 412.

Since you already have 2 212's, I would go for the 412. For the time being just lug it into you Apt or practice space onces, then you will have the 412 once you have a house. Even my house I have to deal with stairs as my music room is in the basement.

Bckba, thanks for being on my side. I agree. I ordered the Splawn 412, all black with white piping. Will install Celestion Greenbacks.

Yeah, wondering how many fellas with full stacks are pissing off their band mates and/or sound guys
:) I usually use a full stack for over 20 years. I am asked to turn up at almost every gig I play. It is about tone .... not dB's. I play at about the same volume as the drummer .... no matter what rig I use.

Because I got tired of lugging this thing around.

I have 2 1x12 (1 thiele loaded with an ev 200watt and 1 half back mesa loaded with super V)
1 2x12 and 1 4x12
I use all of them depending on the gig And situation
The best soundwise combo is with my 2x12 and my thiele 1x12 on top of it
If i want fullstack feel, i use my 2x12 mesa rectifier under my 4x12 mesa roadking cab loaded with v30 and old 90s g12t75. Which sound awesome

I agree, it is not about volume, my volume would be the same with a 412 as a 212. I decided to order the Splawn 412 and install Celestion Greenbacks.

A 4x12 has a lot of power to it and can handle most situations. I've never played a venue where a 4x12 seemed like too much. I don't trust a lot of sound guys to really care enough to make sure my amp is sounding good enough, so a 4x12 at least has enough to give it a solid backing if the PA isn't doing all of the work.
I also have yet to find another cabinet that matches the sound of a 300 watt Marshall 1960BV. I've had the same cabinet for 16 years and it sounds perfect. I've had other cabinets that sound good, but I'm just attached to mine. If I had that history with a 2x12 I might feel differently about the whole situation, but a 4x12 is like a minimum requirement for live in my eyes.

Crate should have made that in the hair metal 80's. They could have sold a ton of them !

I play one of my 9 watt amps through a 4x12 at home. There's nothing quite like the impact of a 4x12, no matter how hard a 2x12 (ported or otherwise) can be run, you can't match the cone movement of four 12" speakers vs two.

The OS Port City 2x12 is the closest I've heard to a 4x12 in side by side tests, by the way.

Im curious... Is the displacement of a 2x12's (front and back) the same as 4x12 (front only)?

No because the sound coming off the back of a 2x12 is 180* out of phase with the sound coming off the front. This means that if the two were combined they would cancel.

Furthermore, not all 2x12 cabs are open back.

Then what happens to the sound waves when the bounce off the back wall of the closed cabinet and are forced through the ports?

Yup, this.

The only thing better than 4x12 thump, is a pair of 4x12's

AGREED!! Love 4X12's...tried the pair of 1X12's and the 2X12, both were "fine," but neither could hold up to a 4X12 FULL STACK

:) I bought these off of Andy Marshall (THD) maybe 8 years ago. Andy built these for Keith Richards for the Steel Wheels Tour. Andy got them back after the tour.

I'm sitting 4 feet from the stack right now. I really need to plug my Fryette Deliverance 120 ~ 4/K88 and a fuzz box into these....

what ohm rating does a 9 speaker cab have?

:) Same as the speakers inside .... 8ohm. I believe they are wired series/parallel...like a 4 speaker cab ... but extended to 9 speakers. This same pattern to be used for 4,9,16,25,etc...speakers.
The bottom cab has two large ports on the back. The sound in the room is everywhere. These cabs are not very directional ... like a closed back 4x12 is directional. The speakers are vintage voiced 10 inch speakers that are rated at 20 watts each. So each cab is rated at 180 watts. I have not weighted them ... but was told they are over 150 pounds each. The cabs have a large midrange hump that cuts great in a mix... But have plenty of lows / highs. I have gigged with these cabs and they sound great. The cabs are not forgiving at all. You need to play very clean with them because they show all detail.... Like under a microscope. When I got the cabs the speakers were completely broken in. Andy, me & Keith are the only ones to own these cabs.

It is my understanding Keith used these with two vintage Tweed Twin's. He wanted the sound / punch of a 4x10 .... but cabs large enough for the Stones shows.

Well, I decided my Bogner and Stone Age 212 cabs are enough for now. I ordered a Splawn straight 412 yesterday. Black on black with white piping.
