I don't think their nearly identical, I think you didn't explain your test well.

But for me, I am always going to prefer the sound of a cab pushing air.

For monitoring yourself on stage I totally agree... but no one else is going to hear that except you.

This video showed that when i comes to what the audience hears FOH.. the difference between a mic'd 4x12 and IRs is pretty much identical. And that's before the rest of the mix is added in.
