What material is the insulation in the back of Bogner cabinets & where can I get some?

It's just synthetic fiber batting (polyester). You can get some at an arts and crafts store. It's thinner than what is on the Bogner cabs so you have to layer it. I did it on my Diezel cab and it sounds great.

Thank you, sir!

What difference did it make? Did it make the top end smoother?

Yes, and muffles the tone. I took it out of my Bogner, and I prefer it out.

I had some egg crate foam on my homemade 212 and 112 cabs. It muffles the tone IMO, but does give a tighter bass response. I can see guys into death metal liking it in, but I felt the cabs breathed more without it.

So give it a try, you may like it, its easy to remove....

So... I was always told the insulation was there to tighten the bottom end.
When the insulation is removed, whats the end result in bottom end?
...and everything else?

I never did understand this, all the great sounding cabinets around and none of them have batting in them  Maybe for super low end stuff maybe??

Tone factor aside, it's a good marketing strategy to separate yourself from all the other upscale Marshall style cabinets out there.

As evidenced by people running around to arts and crafts stores or home depot for insulation batting, trying to capture the Bogner magic dust. :)

You don't stuff the cab with it. It's just a 1/2 inch to inch layer on the back panel. I did it because it help cut some of the ice-pick top end out of my all v30 cab.

Thanks. That's what I'm after.

yep, same here!

it does clean up the highs!

In building subwoofer boxes, adding the insulation to all of the surfaces adds up to 20% more space, at least as far as calculating the speaker enclosure size by the free air resonance of the speaker.

Info above from a book I read awhile back on building your own speakers... was interesting, but then again, guitar cabs are so specialized imho not sure if it would really apply. Just adding to the discussion. :)

What did you use to attach the batting to the panel?

Totally agree it muffles the tone too much! I took it out as well.
Its not like night and day it just makes a subtle difference.

I had a thread years ago asking about how today's 4x12 came to be and the best answer I got was that Marshall built a box to hold 4 12" speakers  I have a book as well and it goes into detail about how in stereo speakers you build the box around your drivers and port size and depth. The driver has specs that you use to compute the box dimension. I have read some boutique builder's sites how they have an exact formula for their enclosures but never got past that.

All I know is that Bogner is the only guy to go this route and have no clue why

I may just open & try some on the sides too. It's interesting to find out the effect it will have.

I went ahead & did it. Just a thin layer of polyester on sides, as I didn't want to alter the mids. Sounds good to me!

BTW I want to get some casters for this thing. Where can I get them?
