Insulation in Bogner cabs

I was always so-so on V30s until I picked up a Rivera KT412 for cheap. Sounded killer, unlike any other V30 cab I've ever had. No icepick highs, and very smooth sounding with even tighter low end. Pulled the back off thinking it might not have V30s and saw the batting. Yes V30s as well. Same construction as the Bogner cabs, bought one to A/B and kept the Rivera. Maybe the batting only improves a cabs tone with certain speakers? I wouldn't even think of adding anything to my Marshall GB cabs. But that V30 cab sounds so good you would't think it even has V30s.

Old thread, sorry. but still relevant for those interested.

I have two Bogner 4x12s. One with insulation and one with it removed. Without the insulation, the cab is more "alive." It resonants more. It sounds deeper, as in slightly farther away (in a good way). With the insulation, the whole cab is dampened a bit. The attack is faster, yes. But the sound is also more in your face and present. Maybe a good way of putting it is that it's like a room mic vs a mic right up against the cone.

I just picked up a used Bogner 4x12 v30s. I notice it is stiffer than my recto 4x12, and my mojo 4x12. It's also a bit muffled, and it feels harder to play. Now that being said it really comes alive when cranked, and with more mids added. I also have to crank the amp a little more to get the same perceived volume as my other cabs.

What do you like better, with batting, or without?

Before I answer your question, I've got one for you haha:

What is the total impedance on this cab? And what is the total impedance on your other cabs? I'm guessing the Bogner is 16ohms, the Mesa is 8ohms, and the Mojo... no idea. But the volume thing is most likely a result of the different impedances between the cabs. The insulation does make the cab 'feel' a bit stiffer I think. Cranking the amp will always help any situation ;) I like some of my amps through one cab without the insulation and some other amps through another cab WITH the insulation. So it really depends on the sound you're going for.

I run a very thin layer of batting in my vertical Mesa 2x12. Works great!

Yes the mesa is 8ohms, the mojo is also 8ohms. However just recently I also had a Fryette D412 (16ohm), and a Marshall 1960AV (16ohm) along with the mesa and mojo. I did not have the perceived volume difference I have with the bogner (well at least not as large) so I would not say this has anything to do with the impedance.

The Bogner certainly sounds great, It's the feel I'm having trouble getting antiquated with. It feels as if I'm fighting it.

I've ran my 68 spec superlead that I build and modded to brown eye, my SLO that I build, my 92 VHT Pitbull Classic, and my RM100 through it. About the same feel.

I'm going to run it at a practice session tomorrow, things may change when its in a band mix.

Take the batting out and see what happens. It's just a few staples. So you can always put it back in. That's the easiest way to find out :)

Yeah, I might try that, or just flip the back around temporally to get and idea how it sounds.

Used it at rehearsal last night. Could not get it to set in the mix very well. Had to turn the bass way down, and turn mids, treb, pres up just to get it to cut through.
However the tweaking left my guitar sounding really thin. So going to pull the batting out sometime this week.

Interestingly I now remember a recording session from 10 years ago. The producer insisted that we use his uberschall and ubercab to track guitars. I remember the same feeling of stiffness, and fighting the amp to get notes out.

Uber cabinet is front loaded

There were rear loaded uber cabs too. But irrelevant I think. The batting I'm thinking is the common link

Ok removed the batting and it came to life. The Stiffness/Dryness is pretty much gone. Next up, going to put a pair of Greenbacks up top.

Pulled all four 16ohm v30's out, put in a pair of 8ohm Greenbacks up top, and a pair of 8ohm v30's in the bottom.
Oh man tonal bliss baby!!!!

Update: Got a chance to really open the amp up with the greenbacks & v30 combo w/o batting today. At high volume the bass was too mushy now, lost focus and tightness. Put the batting back in, and now it's better at high volume.

Conclusion, all v30's I did not like the batting. Greenbacks with v30's, I like the batting.
