Is Synergy really that good?

I think I've about gotten myself talked out of this Synergy rabbit hole, unless I can find a screamin' deal on one somewhere that I could buy/try and could move it easily later without taking too much of a loss. Lots of great insight in this thread, but a few things kept creeping into my head while I was reading through it all:
  • No matter what amps I have access to now, or have owned in the past, I always seem to dial them in to sound like "me".
  • Do I really need a platform that allows several different variations of "me"? Knowing "me", I'd likely load up a Syn-50 and then find one module I liked for clean and one for dirt and stick to it. So, what would the point be for all that versatility if I would probably try to make them all sound the same (like me) or just outright not like them because I couldn't? I have amps now that I like, are capable of both clean and dirt and there is no cost of admission because they are already here.
  • Decision paralysis... I tend to just shut down when there are too many choices. :ROFLMAO:
  • Lots of talk about the power sections making the difference in how an amps sounds. 100% agree with this so I could see how a EL34 vs. 6L6 power section could make a difference. Save for a rack mount tuner, I'm out of the rack gear realm and I have no intention of going back into it. I thought about getting a Syn2 rack mount when I still had power amps (Carvin Ts100 that could run both EL's and 6L6's), but didn't pull the trigger then.
  • I'm looking back at my experience with modelers and all the choices allowed (specifically Kemper). See points one, two and three.

Thanks again to everyone for helping me work my way through this, but I think I'm just going to end up keeping at least one amp from what I have. Maybe more, or all of them.. who knows. I'm still curious about Synergy, and maybe one day I'll try one if I can do so without too much risk. Thanks all!
100% agree
I got into the pod and pod live 20 years ago and sold them because I always gravitated towards the plexi/800 boosted sounds. I bought a THR 30 5 years ago and guess what? I only use 2 or 3 of the sounds in there also. Its cool to try them all out, but after a while, the endless options are too much.

I will say that (20 year old tech aside) I absolutely prefer tube vs digital every time. I turned off the onboard gate and compressor in the THR 30 and it became a little more dynamic, but there is no replacement for the feel and response of a tube amp for me.

For practice, I bought a GPDI/IR and an interface. I couldn't be happier. Lots of tweaking available, but again I have 2 or 3 sounds that I like. Best of all, it feels and reacts exactly like the real deal.

I also contemplated on the synergy and still do. I already have a PS100 so If i did buy in, I'd probably start with the SYN1. Knowing that there might not be the magic between the pre and power amp like the head provides.

Maybe start with the Syn 1 plugged into the loop on an amp you already own?

I noticed that if I go too much gain, bright switches and violence switches up on the Killer Kali, will get a bit of squeal if I stand right against the amp. Don't get it if I'm away from the amp though.

Pretty much anything does that when you are close enough to it. Heck, yesterday I re-stacked my rack stuff, and I had this really bad hum. After some trial and error, it was coming from the Syn-2 sitting right on top of my poweramp. I had to move it up a few rack spaces.

i dove back into fractaland yesterday after grabbing a mint condition IIXL and MFC 101 mark III board for 7 bones. crazy to think new in 2014 the XL was $3k and the MFC was $750. primarily wanted a true line level looper system and all of the great 2290, pcm, h3000 rack type fxs to boot.

spent all of yesterday painfully downloading drivers, fractalbot, sysex firmware updates and got XL up to speed, but failed to get MFC to install the latest fw. errors…

fractal still has the highest quality fx i’ve heard in modern digi gtr boxes, but for rack amp tones, my synergy is not going anywhere.

I still have my old Axe II I bought like 13 years ago. Sometimes I think about selling it for something smaller, but it doesn't seem worth it to sell.

I keep it in a parallel loop because I don't like running straight through it.

I also keep a G Major 2, MPX-1, Intellifex, and Replifex in the system, but I know I could easily just use the Axe. The others are mostly for playing around.

Uh oh. Synergy just posted a close up pic of a 3 preamp tube module with a 4/16 date. Anyone have any inside info?

Edit: Went back to take a closer look, and now I can't find it again.

The switch is also in the default Marshall position, so I am thinking maybe JVM.

About time. I always wondered when they would do that. Looking at those modules, there’s plenty of room in there for one more 12ax7.

Looks cool but I am not sure why they need it given that the amps they go into usually already have 3 preamp tubes and it isn't like they haven't been able to get gain out of their modules. We will find out on the 16th

5 gain stages (the host system has 1) isn't enough? Bear in mind the module doesn't have/need a PI.

I think synergy sounds pretty decent. The LXIIn is better than some of the cheaper/lower power options. But maybe not as good as something with a more conventional output transformer.

Hmm, I wonder if it’s an EVH.

The 5150 III red channel has 7 gain stages. 3 tubes = 6 gain stages + 1 integrated input stage. Not sure I know of any other amps that use that many.

Edit: ok apparently Google is saying the 5150 III uses 6 gain stages at most. Still, you need at least 3 fully utilized tubes to do that. Anybody know if the Synergy input stage tube only uses 1 gain stage, or does it use both? If it only uses 1, you’d still need 3 tubes in the module to get up to six gain stages total.

Modeling is such a brutal deal for early adopters. It should come with lube.

Buying used can make sense though.

It probably is just an 800 and 900 crammed into one. Maybe a few switches

An 800 or 900 wouldn't need more than two tubes in a module though. The 800 uses 3 preamp gain stages and the 900 uses what, 4 or 5? One input stage and two preamp tubes would be more than capable of that.

What you guys can't see is the cupholder attached. It's clearly the long-awaited Billy Blades module....

Interesting ..I would have expected more switches/ gain options like a modified series switch.
I was hoping for a JCM 800 Modified. I wonder if this will sound better or worse than the 800 module they recently discontinued? Those sell for much less used. I know people were dissatisfied with the new SLO II vs the OG module. IMO, the Ecstasy module is the best sounding 800 tone I've heard and felt.
