Japan is going to lie to keep the people there from rioting. If people think that the radiation is inevitable and that the reactors are going to meltdown, they will:

1) Fend for themselves
2) Stop working, thus destroying the Japanese economy
3) Act violently and unpredictably
4) Stop working towards (and putting themselves in harm's way) trying to combat the failing reactors

Let's just say that things are worse than they have officially stated. What would be gained from them leveling with people and giving them such bleak news? Nothing would be accomplished and people will riot. Look at what happened during the Rodney King beatings. When the cops in LA were adquitted of their actions, minorities lost faith in the government and went balistic, fending for themselves. The same happened in the United States in Massachusetts after the Revolutionary War, when many people and states were poor. The Confederation did not have the power to make the sweeping changes that were necessary and people freaked -- then came the Constitution and the Federal government that we are all so familiar with. Japan is an isolated island, and the people there cannot escape. There is little reason to come clean if it means that there is little hope that things will truly be okay and casualty free. People are going to be sick for years in Japan. This is the biggest disaster we've seen since World War II. This thing just dwarfs 9/11.

Just look at all of the conflicting information that is out there. The Japanese government states that the explosion occured from the build up of hydrogen, while the International Nuclear Agency/Commission states that it could have only occured as a result of a core meltdown.
You seem to be under the impression that the Japanese are Americans.

Funny....I was thinking the same thing! HA! :D

I think no matter which way it goes, we will be astounded at how fast the Japanese will recover and rebuild. They are an amazing group of people, and can do in 5 years what it would take us 15 to get done
Do have them in your prayers, I cant imagine what it must be like over there now

Seriously, what the hell is going on over there? I can't see how all this could've occured. How could Japan have built these nuclear powerplants on fault lines, with backup and security systems that have failed them? Honestly, they are now relying on ocean water to cool the reactors -- how the heck did the UN inspectors or any other international body not see the potential problems that we are now faced with.

This isn't a stricly Japanese problem either -- it is a world problem. The radiation being leaked is not within the "legal limit," as purported by the Japanese government, otherwise they wouldn't have told people to stay indoors and to keep wet towels over their mouths. A US warship is now contaminated with radiation -- and they were 100 miles off shore! We are now learning this morning that the rods have been fully exposed in one of the reactors. What happens if the radiation is so bad in an area that people can't even survive going there without getting sick? Then, what -- I guess we are just left with watching the reactors meltdown, all the while hoping for the best.

There is more than one reactor that is failing. That says a lot right there. The Japanese was not and IS not prepared to handle this situation. If one fails and spews radiation, all while people aren't able to go near it, then what will be the fate of the neighboring reactors that are in trouble? Will the Japanese be able to continue finding alternative ways of cooling them? And, are these alternatives even sustainable?

There are too many questions and not enought answers. All we get is conflicting information. How can this be? How could they not have prepared for this? It is absolutely unbelievable.

What do you all think? I am very nervous about all of this and I'm curious to know what you all think.

Funny....I was thinking the same thing! HA! :D

Nope, I have studied their economy and government, that's all. I work for the town of Fairhaven and we have close ties with the Japanese actually. They have historically influenced our culture and we even have a Japanese section of our public library dedicated to past Japanese sailors that visited us in the early 20th century.

All democracies are created under some similar guiding principles. That is what makes them democratic. The people there at this time in need have a desire to look to government for the answers. Just like over here, the government has a responsibility to maintain the structure that governs. This is wholly dependent on the state of affairs. If the Japanese come out and say the whole truth, even with absolutes attached, they will lose their ability to mobilize the people. At the end of the day, they are people in need of food and assistance. They need to know that the situation is under control, to keep aiming to hopefully maintain control. In a time where the consequences may frighten the constituents, the government of Japan is doing a remarkable job telling them what they need to know, when they ought to know it.

Shame on the people here who racially suggest that the looting and stealing a country is dealing with has something to do with their race. I don't understand why I have been the target of comments like, "Tiger Woods is part Japanese too." I never once said I was an oracle on anything, I am just expressing my opinion based on real knowledge on their government. A poster here claimed that I don't understand the Japanese, as if I didn't understand the people's culture. I just pointed out that my lineage is proudly Japanese. Why racially charge an entire country as being thieves, eh?

That would be like claiming all of Boston is highly educated and superior academically, due to the high concentration of higher educational institutions there; or that all of Los Angeles is poor because of the political efficacy of some of its suburbs.

All is fine at the moment though, in respect to their reactors. It seems the reports are that the fuel rods, even if exposed and in meltdown, are still contained. As long as the structures that contain them are intact, we have a good chance of coming out of this better than we should've. This is all based on an MIT professors claims and some claims made by the WSJ.

Well, all I can say is look at how the Japanese people have dealt with this disaster. They've been very calm and united. Then look at how Americans acted after hurricane Katrina. I rest my case.

Edit: My post wasn't meant as a slight against Americans. I've sure Canadians would act in a similar fashion as well. Heck, just look at some of the riots and looting we've had over HOCKEY GAMES!!

I work with someone who's father is an executive who knows the nucear power reactor. He said that they are following the typical procedures for this type of event. If Japan is honest in it's assessment, then a nuclear disaster will bd avoided. If Japan lies to save face, they may not have the time to avoid a major disaster. He also said reactors can only withstand 7.9 scale earth quakes.

With that said, let's all pray for the people there.

Not true Dave... Indian Point is only 15mi from my House It's across the Hudson River, and it was only built to withstand a 3.0 Earthquake.

Now they find that it's on 2 adjoining fault lines, and a 7.0 is possible there... JUST GREAT! :(

Also for those of you suggesting that the Japanese people would Riot, I think not.

They are remaining Polite, and calm... Their culture is quite different from ours... We should be so well behaved... Supermarkets are lowering prices! Vending companies are handing out free drinks, and people are smiling and going about there business as if it were and ordinary day... Getting dressed in suits, and going to work. Others waiting on insanely long lines calmly without so much as a scuffle...

These are extremely refined people... We should all take a lesson including those bickering on this Thread.

Agreed, after the Katrina incident, and seeing what happened there, people here could definately take some notes on how to help each other in a time of crisis, not steal from each other and from buisnesses who were not there to stop them, shooting at the very people who were trying to help, and taking advantage of every last thing they could while they had the opportunity to do so
It was a pathetic and sad display. I have never felt the same about NO since then, and never been back
Thankfully, its not like that everywhere, there are still places here where people help one another, I live in one of those places, and am very thankful to be here

Partly Japanese....so is Tiger Woods. Doesn't make him an expert at explaining the culture. But as the OP said, the lies by the Japanese govt are intended to surpress the looting and rioting, as is so common in crime-ridden Japan. Heck, they'll make Haiti and Katrina look like childs play.

0.4Sv/h at the plant now.

Good luck to those who are close . . .

Remember when they are giving readings micro is good milli is bad, pay attention when they give readings is all.

Also the problem with the radiation getting out now is all those rods that go in the reactor core have to go into the spent fuel containment pool. If this pool loses water and the rods are exposed then they will heat up and burn off radioactive particles. This is what happened today in reactor two. All they can do is keep putting sea watter on it, 50 workers stayed behind to do this, they will be dead in a few hours according to the numbers coming from the meters at that plant. :aww:

Fuel rods can take months to years to cool down to give you an idea of how long they need to be covered.

Going in the reactor room with a exposed fuel rod is pretty much a suicide mission so I am sure they are going to be asking for volunteers.

When you think about it, the core(s) MUST have already at least partially melted...

The 3rd Explosion tonight was caused by Hydrogen gas in the outer containment building... WELL... How does the Hydrogen get there?

Of course it is from the Aluminum Rods Melting and combining with water to form the Hydrogen. That means the Uranium Pellets are exposed. The media is playing like they don't know if it is a meltdown or not... But authorities know very well that the Hydrogen that caused all the explosions can only be present because the Rods Have Already Melted.

This is Not Good.

Hydrogen got there from the water they were pumping in to cool the fuel, then when they vent it because the pressure was building up, the Hydrogen goes boom, the radioactive particles get all over the place.

Water is ALWAYS THERE... That's what keeps the rods from melting, and cools down the Reactor... The Hydrogen comes from the Aluminum Rods that hold the Uranium MELTING... MELTING ALUMINUM & WATER = HYDROGEN: = EXPLOSION.

So what I was saying is If There was Hydrogen there then the RODS HAVE ALREADY MELTED! = PARTIAL MELTDOWN. = NOT GOOD.

And Yes the Steam Vents from the containment vessel into the outer containment building with the Hydrogen, and then Exploded distributing the radioactive steam into the atmosphere... But this may or may not contain solid Radioactive particulate matter...

We will find out as they let more and more informatoin out. But I dont' see this ending well.

TAMPONS! GET YA TAMPONS! Let's sop up some of the menstrual blood and hope for the best! There are smarter people than ALL of us working to take care of this situation. Those two articles posted above that stratotone posted were pretty promising. I'm here for disgusting guitar tones and learning about new gear. You're not doing a public service by polluting the forum with this news, we get enough of it from ALL other media outlets. All I know is when shit does goes down, I'm putting on my most comfortable shorts and flip flops, walking out into the beautiful NH woods, and watching the world go to hell. Know why? I don't give a fuck. Bring it. I'm a lazy American all happy and ignorant just like all of you...difference is, I've come to terms hahahaha

They should build the next nuclear power plant in your backyard then.
