Japan is going to lie to keep the people there from rioting. If people think that the radiation is inevitable and that the reactors are going to meltdown, they will:
1) Fend for themselves
2) Stop working, thus destroying the Japanese economy
3) Act violently and unpredictably
4) Stop working towards (and putting themselves in harm's way) trying to combat the failing reactors
Let's just say that things are worse than they have officially stated. What would be gained from them leveling with people and giving them such bleak news? Nothing would be accomplished and people will riot. Look at what happened during the Rodney King beatings. When the cops in LA were adquitted of their actions, minorities lost faith in the government and went balistic, fending for themselves. The same happened in the United States in Massachusetts after the Revolutionary War, when many people and states were poor. The Confederation did not have the power to make the sweeping changes that were necessary and people freaked -- then came the Constitution and the Federal government that we are all so familiar with. Japan is an isolated island, and the people there cannot escape. There is little reason to come clean if it means that there is little hope that things will truly be okay and casualty free. People are going to be sick for years in Japan. This is the biggest disaster we've seen since World War II. This thing just dwarfs 9/11.
Just look at all of the conflicting information that is out there. The Japanese government states that the explosion occured from the build up of hydrogen, while the International Nuclear Agency/Commission states that it could have only occured as a result of a core meltdown.
You seem to be under the impression that the Japanese are Americans.
Funny....I was thinking the same thing! HA!
Nope, I have studied their economy and government, that's all. I work for the town of Fairhaven and we have close ties with the Japanese actually. They have historically influenced our culture and we even have a Japanese section of our public library dedicated to past Japanese sailors that visited us in the early 20th century.
All democracies are created under some similar guiding principles. That is what makes them democratic. The people there at this time in need have a desire to look to government for the answers. Just like over here, the government has a responsibility to maintain the structure that governs. This is wholly dependent on the state of affairs. If the Japanese come out and say the whole truth, even with absolutes attached, they will lose their ability to mobilize the people. At the end of the day, they are people in need of food and assistance. They need to know that the situation is under control, to keep aiming to hopefully maintain control. In a time where the consequences may frighten the constituents, the government of Japan is doing a remarkable job telling them what they need to know, when they ought to know it.
Shame on the people here who racially suggest that the looting and stealing a country is dealing with has something to do with their race. I don't understand why I have been the target of comments like, "Tiger Woods is part Japanese too." I never once said I was an oracle on anything, I am just expressing my opinion based on real knowledge on their government. A poster here claimed that I don't understand the Japanese, as if I didn't understand the people's culture. I just pointed out that my lineage is proudly Japanese. Why racially charge an entire country as being thieves, eh?
That would be like claiming all of Boston is highly educated and superior academically, due to the high concentration of higher educational institutions there; or that all of Los Angeles is poor because of the political efficacy of some of its suburbs.
All is fine at the moment though, in respect to their reactors. It seems the reports are that the fuel rods, even if exposed and in meltdown, are still contained. As long as the structures that contain them are intact, we have a good chance of coming out of this better than we should've. This is all based on an MIT professors claims and some claims made by the WSJ.
