My entire youtube channel is just based on in the room clips and I know they have become some peoples all time favorite clips to reference guitar tone. If we do wet clips we label it as such.

Channel is in my signature below if anyone cares or just look up SuckerFreeGear on Youtube.

Your demos are great. Remember you use a Iphone 4?

Or demoing an amp through a cab sim or reactive load. Defeats the purpose

And, adds a good bit of fizz, and sounds like shit.

Just poking fun Jeffy. Your time will come.
Now get your ass out there and deliver them box of baby chicks!!

Hey Big D....

I hit the zoom HQ3 and let her rip. Mistakes and all. I really do not care how a guitar tracks with a backtrack, cab sim (unless specifically demoing the afore mentioned). I will hit drives, delays just to show how the amp reacts/takes those effects. In the end, it is the room.

Yes, thank you. IPhone 4S actually not the first 4 sounded the most organic without compression, unfortunatly our last iPhone 4S died so we quietly transitioned to the iPhone 7 about a year go without telling anyone as it sounded best out of all the new generation iPhones but honestly the 4S is still the best. All the new stuff seems to automatically compress everything it records and also the 4S no matter how loud did not clip either like other phones.

All our clips from now on will be shot with a iPhone XS Max as they record in stereo.

What? I hope all of you disparaging cab sims aren't talking about Two Notes Torpedo sims because it's next level shit that can sound just like whatever mic and cab setup you've got going on. Certainly better than 90% of conventional recordings I hear on forums.

Listen to all that extra fizz and shitty tone.  You know what really defeats the purpose of a tube amp? Playing it through a 4x12 cab and micing in your untreated bedroom.

Hear hear!

The last thing that my Torpedo Live is putting out is fizz. When I owned a H&K Tubemeister 18, the Redbox out on that, sure, that gave me fizz on the drive channel, but the Torpedo Live... nuh-uh.
Mesa CabClone out, unloaded? Yes, raspy, nasty shit. (Hook up a cab in parallel and suddenly the CabClone sounds miles and miles better... something that that angry Peter Griffin guy never tried with his anti-CabClone rants, methinks...)

And mind you, I got a whole slew of the classic guitar recording mics at hand, save a Coles ST4038 and a Royer R121, with good quality pre-amps, channelstrips, hardware comps, etc.... by the time I've set that up the way I wanted to sound, I could have done 3 demo's on the Torpedo.

carry on.

I can deal with some delay or reverb in the clip but I do hate clean clips on high gain heads . If I wanted a clean amp i would buy a fender.

I also need some lead lines in a clip. I can't tell squat about the lead tone if there is no lead in the clip.

I hate clips that every time the player goes above the 9th fret he flips to the neck position.

I prefer in the room phone clips better than anything else overall. It's obviously not pro audio, but we've all made phone clips and you have that as a reference point for how what you're hearing translates. That's great you made a clip with 3 high end mics into a $2k interface and mixed it on your etc. I have no clue how the amp sounds because it's being colored by everything else you're using. A phone clip? I know exactly how those sound and can get a rough idea of what the amp is like in the room.

thanks for sharing Peter, I don't claim to make the best clips but for the most part (iphone) my clips are just plug and chug - although if feels better in the room than youtube can translate.

I had more phones recording last weekend at the LA Amp Show than ever since I had a four way cab switcher going that switched instantly when we flicked the knob. That really opened up some eyes, and ears to subtle and not so subtle differences on my speakers.

But it was minimal everything, no OD pedals, no massive delay, flanger, fuzz, etc. Most of the time it was just guitar>cord>amp> into one of four 4x12 cabs.

David Bray got a lot of video clips, still sorting through it all on his phone. I'll post some of it with the better players that came through over the weekend when I get them.

Obligatory demo room pic below.

I like produced clips. Ultimately, what I look for in an amp is how well it records.
