I'm a bar/club guitar god...does my opinion count? :poke: Doesn't much matter at this point as I haven't watched the clip yet :D

As a collector of live shows, including Aerosmith, they,ve done nothing since 1974 I'm interested in.

Joe, besides being one of the sloppiest guitarist ever, was too loud in the mix. His fills in the 1st tune were atrocious

I watched the whole thing and maybe it's because Ive been playing a lot lately at loud volumes but I'm not hearing him play out of tune for the whole tune. Yes, he is out on the lead passages and places but I'm not getting how some are saying that he was out the whole tune. When someone says "WHOLE TUNE" I'm thinking like he is playing a half step down throughout the performance or something like that and not areas in a song. HAHAHAHAHA!!

With that said, and this is just my opinion, but I agree, I Don't like the tone, but we all know that there's lot's of reasons that could have tributed to that.
And to my Brotha Big Daddy "D", I gotta say bro, that I'm actually glad people have an opinion. I'm getting tired of the PC bullshit. I could give a rats ass that Aerosmith is Iconic. A bad performance is a bad performance. I have many of them on youtube and Id be the first to admit it if someone called me on it.
It's all good!

All IMHO.

I am all for an opinion, I think he sounded like shit myself, but the show must go on. He can't stop mid song during live television. PC is one thing, and there is nothing PC about this place. It is more of a follow the leader mentality. Whether regarding gear or anything else. JP had a string out of tune on a floating trem. WTF was he supposed to do? Big deal, they got through it. He will still be cool, he will still have an iconic collection of rock gems he wrote and recorded and a badass collection of gear that we will all drool over as 6 or 7 guys bitch that he sounded bad on one song.

I never said it didn't, did I? I said I found this thread funny. If some jaded, douche walked into the bar when you were playing and your guitar went out of tune during one song and he based your entire career off of that and walk out saying that your tone and playing sucked, wouldn't you think it was a tad funny? Especially if you were pretty fucking good?

I am not a couch god. I am just a God.....or as most of you would say...aren't I entitled to an opinion....

It's called expressing an opinion, the same way you did above. What's really funny is when people rip on others with illogical statements for expressing their opinion, just because it doesn't agree with theirs.

Hmmmm....such an ironic statement you just made....and read my comments above.

There was no irony in my post.

Don't worry, we all make stupid comments at times. It only gets really stupid when we don't just move on and instead try to further elaborate and rationalize our way out of it.

Well I think you distaste has more to do about this place then the performance or peoples opinion :D

I'm just saying that this is a discussion board and people are going to give their opinion. I see a lot of opposite things happening on many boards including this one where people aren't objective at all. If they are a fan of a particular band or person, the artist could literally FART into a Mike and everyone will say how great it was. That annoys the shit out of me just as much as the people who rag on everything just for the sake of raggin on it. I think it all should be about balance but That's just my 0.02

Those hidious fills aren't an out of tune guitar, IMO. Besides the horrendous bending there sounds like a harmonizor on it making it sound further out of whack.

The loud mix doesn't help cause Perry is a sloppy player. What a mess. These guys should have quit in '75

I definitely like material after 75. I thought Draw the Line was great, liked Night in the Ruts and lost some interest after that but have heard tunes through the years that I thought were great.

Yeah, I have most of their stuff, but as far as collecting live shows, the stuff from '74 was killer shit. I was a fan of the Joe Perry Project too. First 2 albums anyway

Ah, gotcha. There were definitely some really, really bad years for live shows during the later 70's. I saw them in 79 and was very disappointed, and they were my favorite band at the time. Van Halen stole my allegiance that night (was a festival show with VH as the second headliner).

I am not the love child of a backstage tryst between Joe and my mom. He's not my uncle. He's not my kids godfather. I am not a beneficiary to his estate. Honoring Joe is not a sacred rite to me. He is a world famous guitarist who has spent his entire life playing on stage and recording guitar in the best studios in the world. He has the best gear in the world. He has probably the best guitar tech money can buy. That show was the most people who had ever seen Aerosmith live at one time. It had 21 million viewers. And to not be able to stand up and say "Joe Perry was freaking horrible last night", seems beyond bizarre.

I just watched it again. To blame those notes that he was mangling on an out of tune string is giving him way too much benefit of the doubt. On many of them, he is just bending the G string, not doing double stops. I don't care if the G string is out of tune when you start the bend. It doesn't have to be out of tune when you finish the bend. The note is not achieved when you move the string a certain distance. It's achieved when you reach the freaking target note. And when he played a unison line with Tylers vocal later in the song, strangely that string was not out of tune. I think most of those notes are still hanging out there, somewhere in space, just waiting for someone to come along and resolve them so they can move into the afterworld.

What have we learned?

- Joe Perry is a rock and roll icon.
- He has achieved more musically in his life than I could in 100 lifetimes.
- Joe has sold more albums in his life than all the guys on every guitar forum have combined. ( I know Steve Stevens has sold a lot of albums so he helps the forum guys cause, but not enough ;) )
- Joe looks cooler at 60 something than I ever did.
- Joe played horribly on American Idol the other night.
- Big Daddy D likes Joe Perry. A lot. :)

Am I the only one that didn't think it was THAT bad? He was messing with his trem too much but I didn't think it was terrible. Not really guitar god material or anything, but better than most

It did seem to sound better via youtube than on my TV for some reason, but it wasn't a spectacular performance in my opinion. But yeah, better in retrospect.

I suppose I could agree with that if I were some sort of Aerosmith fanboy or I didn't agree that Joe Perry sounded terrible. In no way did I ever say that people weren't entitled to their opinions. In fact, I share a similar one. I do think that it is funny, though, that people on a guitar forum are ragging on him for being out of tune (and by that I mean having a string or 2 out of tune, ) and continuing on with the show. Many of you play out regularly. What would you have done...wiggled your nose? Stopped the show? Grinned and bared or and rocked out the best you could? That is my point. It is rock and roll, and the show sucks anyway. It is American Idol....WGAS?
