I am not the love child of a backstage tryst between Joe and my mom. He's not my uncle. He's not my kids godfather. I am not a beneficiary to his estate. Honoring Joe is not a sacred rite to me. He is a world famous guitarist who has spent his entire life playing on stage and recording guitar in the best studios in the world. He has the best gear in the world. He has probably the best guitar tech money can buy. That show was the most people who had ever seen Aerosmith live at one time. It had 21 million viewers. And to not be able to stand up and say "Joe Perry was freaking horrible last night", seems beyond bizarre.

I just watched it again. To blame those notes that he was mangling on an out of tune string is giving him way too much benefit of the doubt. On many of them, he is just bending the G string, not doing double stops. I don't care if the G string is out of tune when you start the bend. It doesn't have to be out of tune when you finish the bend. The note is not achieved when you move the string a certain distance. It's achieved when you reach the freaking target note. And when he played a unison line with Tylers vocal later in the song, strangely that string was not out of tune. I think most of those notes are still hanging out there, somewhere in space, just waiting for someone to come along and resolve them so they can move into the afterworld.

What have we learned?

- Joe Perry is a rock and roll icon.
- He has achieved more musically in his life than I could in 100 lifetimes.
- Joe has sold more albums in his life than all the guys on every guitar forum have combined. ( I know Steve Stevens has sold a lot of albums so he helps the forum guys cause, but not enough ;) )
- Joe looks cooler at 60 something than I ever did.
- Joe played horribly on American Idol the other night.
- Big Daddy D likes Joe Perry. A lot. :)

Actually, I am not any kind of Joe Perry fan at all. I may own one Aerosmith record at best and I think it is a best of. I have no J.P. records. I would not say I like Joe Perry ...a lot. I just don't jump on the Rig Talk bandwagon...a lot. I made a statement....and it was he was out of tune. How that becomes I like him a lot is completely illogical. No amp will fix that. I never said his tone was good or bad. I said NO AMP WILL FIX THAT....you guys can be so sad. Learn to read. I am out....like your logic boards.

Come on Big Daddy. I don't know if something more has happened that I am not aware of to sour you on the forums. I'm just having fun here. What more can we expect to get out of forums? And, I want to watch a game with you. Your favorite team. While they are losing. You better not bitch at any of those guys either.

You should have heard me last week while watching the Lakers, complaining about Kobe Bryant. :gethim: I may be a couch guitar god, but I am a couch MONSTER basketball player of near legendary status. All 5'7" of me.

I grew up listening to Aerosmith, they were my first rock heroes from when I was in elementary school. I listened to them all the way through high school.
That said, they never were that good live. I was disappointed a couple of times.
No shock to me that 30 years later they still can't give a decent live performance.
It is what it is, maybe the last time you'll see them all together on stage.
If you were expecting more than that.....

Its just karma. Put a Floyd on a Les Paul = bad things happen.

i've seen aerosmith 3 times live across several years.

when perry left the band they played hawaii and it was so bad i left....tyler was on serious drugs and made out with the new guitar player. it was horrific.

then i saw dokken open for them at the forum and they crushed dokken to bits.

then i saw guns and roses open for them at pacific amphitheater and although guns were amazing on their appetite tour, aerosmith was amazing and totally held their own.

this wasn't as bad as hawaii, but for such a big opportunity i was really hoping for a better showing from such a normally great band.

ps i thought floyds never went out of tune...still don't think it was the guitar.

Floyd Rose nightmares + Gorilla tone
Perry also had the worst performance/tone on Merry Xmas a few years ago
His tone on live 70s releases was cool, but now he can't escape my couch wrath

Tyler really likes him though, if he squeezed in any tighter he'd be a cojoined twin
"Joe Perry everybody!"

Why is the Floyd Rose to blame? That Les Paul isn't out of tune. Perry's lousy bending and whatever effect he's using is horribly warping the sound.

Neal Schon, Alex Lifeson use Floyds on a Les Paul

Maybe it is a reality show thing?

Remember Carlos Santana's Dancing with the Stars spot? Same type of thread, most of us jumped all over that terrible performance and some yelled he is a god he has bad nights.

Only thing I think is Curt brought up a point, he can afford the best during sound check and something still happened.

guitar player, aging sports hero, all the same. If you are a pro and flaunt your wealth from being so you better bring your A game every day.

As Joe Dimaggio said..."I try my best every day because someone may be seeing me for the first time"................................

What would you have done...wiggled your nose? Stopped the show? Grinned and bared or and rocked out the best you could? That is my point. It is rock and roll, and the show sucks anyway. It is American Idol....WGAS?

I would have wiggled my nose, stopped time, rebooted the Internet and then started back at the beginning.

we have to blame something so something inanimate and defenseless is good.
(...actually i was kidding.... :D )

funny like the others said the yt clip doesn't sound as bad as the real tv moment.
my daughter was looking at me during the song with her scrunchie gross face and asked "dad why is he doing that?"

"um..."

but remember how we the collective guitar forum consciousness ground toothless meth ed to dust and he responded by coming back with a new set of choppers and a vengeance on his axe.

here's hoping perry hits the woodshed and sharpens his axe.

Dude. That performance was horrific. I closed the vid after about 20 seconds. it's a shame. There's rmany better bands that coud have used that exposure.

this is one i thought would have taken the world by storm if they premiered on the AI final

Now that was the shit, bass player was as cool as the other side of the pillow and is just another reason Perry really fucked up.............he has a shit ton of money and people to ensure he sounds great and still got owned. This guys have nothing but a big YT fan base.

i havent heard areosmith other than what i hear on the radio and the simpsons so i dont know what they usually sound like, but that performance sucked. and there are a bunch of fucking retard ai fans raving in the youtube comments about it
