Karnivore vs V30

That sandy overtone is classic 5150 II not being cranked up enough. Literally every 5150 I’ve ever owned or played sounds that way until well above gen Z volume levels.

In classic eminence attitude it showcases exactly how an amp sounds good or bad. I actually liked that it shows this downside to a 5150 - it’s supposed to. If it didn’t, the speaker EQ would be guilty of imposing too much control over what’s driving it and everything sounding the same that runs through the karnivore.
The sandy overtone I hear in pretty much every Karnivore clip I've heard though so I think it's a tonal quality of the speaker IMO It's something that kinda bothers me about the speakers tone as well.

V30's do stick out in a mix but that upper mid spike they have really does kinda bother me. It's always sounded, I don't know, it's not quite a honk, but sort of like a honk that's been shifted upwards a bit, like a "hoink" or "cernk" maybe I dunno. It's hard to describe but it's there. And the ever-present "shhhhhhh" sound they make is kinda obnoxious.

I will say that if you start off listening to the Karnivore in the video and then hear the V30's pop on, then all the V30's worst aspects jump out at you. BUT if you start off the video at a V30 part, then suddenly your ear hears that as the baseline and you start to hear some of the maybe less desirable, more peaky aspects of the Karnivore when it pops in.

All things considered though I liked the Karnivore by a good margine. It's a lot smoother without sounding rounded off, and any weird peak frequencies it might have are much less prominent than the weird peaks of the V30.

I will say that as a platform on which you can then apply post-EQ to really get surgical with dialing in your sound, the Karnivore's sound like they'd be MUCH better suited to that, as they seem much more balanced overall. Even without considering post-EQ the Karnivore sounds better to me though.

Yep I'll take the Karnivore.

Another Karnivore vs V30, from @killertone

I had this on and every time I looked up because I heard something I liked, it was the Karnivore. Every time I thought wow that's way too middy and relatively pokey and small sounding, it was the V30.

Guys I think we may actually have a contender to the mighty V30 here.

Great take. 5150 II do need to be cranked, and sound best to me with all JJ’s with the exception of maybe one real Mullard in V1.

If the amp isn’t loud, the power tubes don’t vibe since they’re over biased. The 100 ohm screen resistors mean you can get more sensitivity and enhanced response when the amp is at performance volume. I don’t think that’s well understood.

The Eminence I have behave as you describe: revelatory. If the amp/guitar isn’t vibing, you know. They are honest. Never heard it put like you stated it, but you’re right.

these went on sale to the general public. Sold out pretty fast. First the 16 ohm. Then the 8 ohm. I was thinking about picking one up but decision was made for me.

Also engl XXL cab will have karnivore. Hinestly that has me interested. That and this video mixing karnivoire with dv77 that I thing sounds pretty good.
I grabbed a pair of 8 last night. When I bought them Sweetwater was out of 16 and only had five 8 left.

I hear the same fizz in the presence I hear in T75s.

How are you going to break them in?
I will probably just play them.

Something I have done in the past is set up my Axe FX to send a 20hz signal through the speakers for a few hours. Just enough I can see the cone moving back and forth, but you cant really hear it.

The boxes are getting shipped off with all the v30s I’m selling lol. I’ve had the first quad since July and have played them with my band and recording. And since I already dislike v30s, these are a massive improvement in every way.

I wonder if it’s something that will improve with speaker break in? I don’t hear anything outlandish myself with other amp run throughs but I do worry how it will change after full break in.

The reviews on YT are premature since the speakers require extensive (at LEAST 50 hours) break-in.
