And this is where we are all different because I would say their songwriting is brilliant. Most of their songs are not one or two listens "catchy" but after several listens, they are so catchy and they are not disposable catchy where you are tired of it after 10 listens. I have to say they are one of my all time favorite bands. And Dug is probably my all time favorite rock singer.
Absolutely agree with this..I consider KingsX probably my favorite band. 3 Piece, GREAT harmonies and lots of great songs. I was lucky enough to stumble upon them in '89 at a club in St Paul Mn and they were doing the whole Gretchen album beginning to end. Great experience and have been a fan ever since. Tried to catch them every time they were near me..Dogman show in '93 was also amazing. Ty is such a tasteful and melodic player..big fan.

Killer band. They don't just write great songs, but understand groove, feel and great tones.

Well said! Couldn't have said it better myself.

Dogman riff... Such a cool unique groove. The first time I heard that I was blown away. Hits like Killin In The Name Of.

One of my favorite bands ever..
Been in since the very beginning, and while I love almost everything they have ever done, I would say there were moments later in time where I think they just got weighed down a bit by the same things that affect everyone after years of trying to translate what you are feeling at that moment into music. I think its a bit unfair to them to judge their music as a whole by some of the latter offerings that are not quite up to what we came to expect from them after the early stuff. The very process of life itself can clutter up one's vision, I do think they have put out some great stuff as of late. They are still among the greatest heavy rock trio's ever, you know its them instantly when you hear them.
I've been lucky enough to see them several times over the years, one time at a tiny club on the beach in pensacola fla, where I was standing 3feet away from dug the whole show. They are amazing live.
Long live the King

Love King's X... Found this slamming version of Dogman a while back.

Its funny to see Ty wearing that MSR t-shirt, He was a huge Mike LaRocco fan back in the days of Mike's motocross wars. Ty rode MX himself, and was pretty dam good from what I understand

best band ever

who said they don't write catchy tunes?

Great band! I was blown away the first time I listened to "Gretchen Goes to Nebraska"...it was such a breath of fresh air during the stagnant late 80's when pop-metal drivel ruled the airwaves. The guitar tones were new and unique and the songwriting was absolutely brilliant. When the heavy riff kicks in during Summerland...wow...perfection! It's kind of ironic that one of my all time favorite tones came from a solid state Lab Series L5 that most players by that time viewed as a boat anchor with knobs...and the same could be said for the Elite Strat.

Speaking of the L5, I just saw BB King last month and he still uses one. I was right in front of him and heard the actual amp rather than the PA...he was using a ton of gain! If I plugged one of my humbucker-equipped guitars into it, I'm sure it would have been no problem to whip out a Priest or Maiden tune using BB's settings.

One of my favorites. No one else like them. and they've been doing it forever! Everytime I hear Lost in Germany it blows my mind.

You're probably talking about me, but you aren't really quoting me correctly. I actually said, "but not enough catchy tunes IMO." They have written a few catchy tunes that caught my attention, but if you look at their entire inventory of music, I think the % of memorable catchy tunes is on the low side for a band of their caliber and skill.

I'm a "him" btw, and I'm sorry that I don't have the same exact opinions as everyone else on this board. I thought it was a public forum where we were allowed to discuss things based on our own experiences, views, and tastes.

The wink and a smile was intended to indicate a friendly approach.
I very much disagree with your opinion and find there to be a gamut of memorable ditties in the King's X catalogue. Live, the crowd sing along in unified voice and in one case, take the entire vocal on themselves. I've never seen that with any other hard rock band.
The only mystery for me is why they are not more popular as they manage to attract listeners from other genres that don't usually listen to such heavy music.

King's X has always been a kick ass band. I thought they would have been bigger than what they were?

That's the real travesty, .....they're a band that should've got over. It's a crime that they didn't, with all these other mediocre bands that have since their inception. That's the way I feel anyway.

I agree. Another band that I thought should have made it bigger is Y and T. Especially, during the early to mid-eighties, they were putting out some great albums during that time. It makes you wonder if these bands just had bad manager's or, the label's just didn't bother promoting them good enough?

Love Kings X! I never played in drop d till I heard Kings X Out of the Silent Planet...
